While "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" and "Incredibles 2" are still on top, new releases "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" and "Uncle Drew" managed to overperform and delivered solid debuts.
"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" dropped a steep 59%, but remained in first place with $60 million. The film's domestic tally has reached $264.7 milliom, while overseas it's close to topping $700 million. At this pace, it will cross $1 billion in less than a week.
Disney and Pixar's "Incredibles 2" is still going strong, dropping just 43%. The film has grossed $45.5 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic cume to $439.7 million, while overseas it has brought in $207.1 million. China is the film's best international market with a total of $40.8 million. The film will open in France, U.K. and South Korea throughout July.
The first of the new wide releases, the action thriller "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" opened in third place with $19 million from 3,055 locations. The first film opened with $12.1 million in 2015 after an initial limited release, and finished its theatrical run with $46.8 million after 17 weeks. The sequel might not last that long, but it's certainly a strong start, and with a modest $35 million budget, turning a profit shouldn't be a problem. The film received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (62 on Rotten Tomatoes and 60 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a "B" grade from their opening night polls.
In fourth place we find the other new release, the basketball comedy "Uncle Drew" , which opened with an estimated $15.5 million from 2,742 theaters. It's a great outcome considering it only cost $19 million to produce. The film received mixed reviews from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes and 57 on Metacritic), and an "A" from CinemaScore's polls.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Warner Bros' "Ocean's 8" with $8 million, bringing the film's domestic tally to $114.7 million. Internationally the film is $5 million short of topping $100 million.
A surprise entry in the Top 10 is Fox International's "Sanju", which debuted at #9 with $2.5 million from just 356 theaters. The film opened in India at #1 with $21.6 million, Fox's second largest debut there.
