How exactly can a $101 million weekend be labeled as 'disappointing' you might ask ? Well, given that the expectations for "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" were incredibly high, there's no other way to describe it. Meanwhile, new releases "The Night Before" and "The Secret in Their Eyes" were not strong enough to even come close to the Top 3.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2", the final chapter of a four movie series that was actually a trilogy, finished the weekend with $101 million, the weakest debut of any installment in the franchise. Signs of trouble were apparent when "Mockingjay Part 1" opened with $121.8 million, which was a considerable step down from the $152 and $158 million grossed by the first two films. Clearly the series started to show signs of fatigue, much like its sister franchise "Divergent". Still, "Mockingjay Part 2" cleared its $125 million budget with an additional $146 million from overseas markets. A decline was registered in each of the countries where it opened, and the worldwide gross is $27.8 less than "Part 1".
The James Bond sequel "Spectre" suffered a bit from the release of Mockingjay, scoring only $14.6 million over the weekend for a $153.7 million domestic total. The film's worlwide earnings have reached $677.8 million.
The new R-rated Christmas comedy "The Night Before" and the thriller "Secret in Their Eyes" underperformed with $10.1 million and $6.6 million, respectively, for a fourth and fifth place, finish. However, both films had modest production budgets, so they're not in any real danger of flopping.
New Wide Releases: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2", "The Night Before", "The Secret in Their Eyes".
Biggest Drop : "The 33" (-61%)
Smallest Drop : "The Martian" (-44%)
