We haven't had a lot of hype-building news surrounding "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" for some time now. But all that has changed with the announcement of the first new cast addition.

Canadian actress Pom Klementieff is set to join the sequel in the role of Mantis. The news was first revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, but they weren't quite sure what the role was, other than the fact that it was a "key role". It seems that Marvel was specifically looking for an Asian actress. It was later reported by Deadline that, according to their own sources, Klementieff's mysterious character is the superhero Mantis.

In the comics, Mantis is a half-Vietnamese half-German who grew up at the Temple of the alien Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree, after her father left her in Vietnam. She excels in her martial arts studies and eventually becomes a member of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Pom Klementieff has worked mostly in France, but her English-language debut was actually in Spike Lee's "Oldboy" remake in 2013. Her last film was the 2015 hacker romance "Hacker's Game".

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2" is written and directed by James Gunn and the cast, so far, includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. The release date is set for May 5, 2017.
