Ellen Page in Talks to Star in FLATLINERS Remake

Ellen Page to star in Flatliners Remake
It's been a while since I've heard any news regarding the "Flatliners" remake, but it looks like things are finally moving forward. According to Variety, Ellen Page ("Inception") is in talks star in the film, which will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the helmer of the Swedish "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo". If the remake will be somewhat faithful to the original, then Page will probably take the role previously played by Julia Roberts.

The original "Flatliners" was released in 1990 and was directed by Joel Schumacher. The film followed a series of near-death experiments conducted by a group of medical students played by Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin. The purpose of the experiments was to determine if there is such a thing as life after death. The problem is that once revived, each one of them brings back physical manifestations of their own sins.

Schumacher, as usual, delivered a stylish thriller, that might not be the most brilliant piece of cinema ever made, but it had a great cast, excellent cinematography, and it got the job done. It was nominated for a Sound Effects Editing Oscar in 1991 and ended up grossing $61 million in the U.S., which today would amount to about $121 million.

There's plenty to improve in the remake, unless they decide to do one of those frame-by-frame copies. Also, remakes like this year's "Poltergeist" should inspire caution.

If you haven't seen the original "Flatliners", here's a trailer:
