pacific-rim-2-star-trek-3-updates

Guillermo del Toro Picture
Two sci-fi sequels are moving forward and we have some new updates to talk about. First, we have a release date for "Pacific Rim 2" and some interesting details. The sequel to last year's robots versus monsters blockbuster was not exactly a sure thing. While the film grossed $411 million worldwide, it only managed to take in $101 million domestically, which isn't very impressive. But, the franchise has some decent potential, so Guillermo del Toro is now hard at work writing the sequel's script with Zak Penn ("X2"), and the finished product is expected to hit theaters on April 7, 2017, in IMAX 3D. The filmmaker also revealed that in the meantime we can look forward to an animated series that will extend the "Pacific Rim" universe. Also, it seems that the sequel will be released by Universal Studios, who have taken over distribution duties from Warner Bros.

Roberto Orci Picture
As for "Star Trek 3", we have the first update regarding the plot and where the crew of the USS Enterprise is headed next in 2016. The film will be directed by franchise writer Roberto Orci, after J.J. Abrams left to work on "Star Wars: Episode VII", and here is what he had to say about the plot:
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films – especially the 2009 [Star Trek] – was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren’t the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

jurassic-world-set-photo

A new set photo has been released online for "Jurassic World". The image was shared by director Colin Trevvorow and while it still doesn't reveal anything truly significant, it effectively teases the carnage that we can expect from the sequel. Although the plot has not been revealed, the film is said to involve a fully functioning dinosaur park where, as we can see in this photo, things go terribly wrong. Trevvorow's film stars Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy and Judy Greer.

"Jurassic World" opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

the-disappearance-of-eleanor-rigby-jessica-chastain-trailer-images

The first trailer for the drama "The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby" has been released. The film stars Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy as a couple who tries to reclaim the life and love they once knew and pick up the pieces of a past that may be too far gone. Originally, director Ned Benson filmed the story as two movies subtitled "Him" and "Her" which told the story from the perspective of each character. The theatrical release in this trailer is the union of the two movies and it's subtitled "Them". The film also stars Bill Hader, Viola Davis, William Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Isabelle Huppert and Jess Weixler.

"The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby" opens in theaters on September 26th, followed by limited releases for "Him" and "Her".

transformers-age-of-extinction-box-office

"Transformers: Age of Extinction" proved once again just how popular this franchise is. The third sequel in the series, and reboot of sorts, opened with $100 million domestically and $201 million overseas, the biggest summer debut, yet. The domestic opening is the second best of the series, behind "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" ($108 mil) and just slightly above "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" ($97 mil). I don't know about all of you reading this, but I smell a new sequel cooking.

With no other major wide releases to speak of, "22 Jump Street" held its ground as this week's No. 2 movie at the box-office. The R-rated comedy grossed $15 million, and has now rounded up $139 million domestically, surpassing the first film's lifetime gross of $138 million.

Last week's No. 1 movie, the comedy sequel "Think Like a Man Too" dropped by more than 64% from last weekend, sliding down to No. 4 with just $10 million over the weekend. The film has grossed $48 million domestically, but it looks like it will have a hard time matching the $98 million total of the first film.

predator-sequel-shane-black

Shane Black
It's no surprise, really, that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with a new installment in the "Predator" franchise. What is surprising, though, is that Fox has chosen "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "Iron Man 3" writer/director Shane Black to write and direct the movie. He will write the first treatment of the script, and then scripting duties will be handled by Fred Dekker. Although initially this bit of news came as a report about a reboot being in the works, things were clarified by Black himself.

Here's what the filmmaker had to say about the sequel: "As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine ?" He also added that he likes "the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button." Dekker and Black have worked together in the past on the action comedy "The Monster Squad", which Dekker directed and co-wrote with Black.

This sounds like a bold move on Fox's part, but one that could pay off. The previous attempt to reboot the franchise with 2010's "Predators" produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Nimrod Antal, did not turn out the way the studio was expecting, so this new attempt clearly requires a different approach that, hopefully, Shane Black can deliver.

Well, just one pic of a Dinobot, actually, but I hear a lot of the movie is like that. It seems like the Dinobots themselves will only be a small part of the 165 minutes movie. mad-max-fury-road-first-look-images

We finally have the first look at George Miller's long-awaited sequel/reboot to the 1980s classic "Mad Max". The new film will be titled "Mad Max: Fury Road" and from these first images released by Entertainment Weekly, I can say that the spirit of the original films is still there. The pictures give us a look at the new Max, played by Tom Hardy, the villainous Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, and her minion Nux, played by an almost unrecognizable Nicholas Hoult.

The coolest thing about this reboot is that, according to his interview in EW, director George Miller intends the film to be one huge chase scene :
"I wanted to tell a linear story–a chase that starts as the movie begins and continues for 110 minutes."
The film also stars Riley Keough, Zoe Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Rosei Huntington-Whiteley, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones and Abbey Lee Kershaw.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" opens in theaters on May 15, 2015.

box-office-think-like-a-man-too-no-1

The Kevin Hart comedy "Think Like a Man Too" scored the highest weekend gross, a safe but not particularly impressive $30 million. Although the sequel only cost $24 million, it placed behind 2012's "Think Like a Man" which opened with $33 million versus a smaller $12 million budget. While the first film went on to gross $91 million, the sequel could fall short of the $90 million mark.

Clint Eastwood's musical "Jersey Boys" underperformed and opened in fourth place with $13 million. The film was made on a budget of $40 million, so it could manage to recouperate most, if not all, of its costs.

Last weeks's No. 1 movie "22 Jump Street" stepped down to second place but is still going strong and has already passed the $100 million mark. "How to Train Your Dragon 2" registered a similar drop, but has not yet passed $100 million. However, Dreamworks' animated feature has performed quite well overseas.

Milla Jovovich Resident 6 Evil Final Chapter
It's been two years since the last film in the "Resident Evil" franchise, and we now have official word on the new sequel's status from the series' writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson. In an interview for Collider, the filmmaker revealed that the upcoming installment will be the last one, and it will be titled "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter". A bit obvious, in my opinion, but fitting. Anderson also revealed that he is currently writing the first draft for The Final Chapter and that there is no official start date for shooting. Also, a release date is definitely out of the question at this point. Furthermore, Anderson hinted that the film could be shot in 3D.

Here are some excerpts from his interview:
"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is the working title. It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].

There are no set dates for shooting yet. I think we’re waiting until we have a first draft screenplay and then go from there.

I don’t know [when it will be in theaters], depends how fast I write, I guess. There’s no set date yet but hopefully we’ll have an announcement for that soon.

That’s what’s on the title page, it’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely.

I firmly believe that you have to start thinking about the 3D even in the writing process. You cannot make a great 3D movie by just—it’s not some special sauce that you can sprinkle on. You make the dish and then you make hot sauce on top—it doesn’t work well like that. Yes, you can do a last minute conversion. You can not shoot the movie thinking about 3D and do a last minute conversion and it can be a 3D movie, it’s just not gonna be a great 3D movie. I approach my films right from the inception, I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know—because I’ve done so much of it—will translate very well into 3D. Then when we build the sets, we build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It’s really, even from this point, 3D is something I’m definitely thinking about. "

Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episode 8
It seems J.J. Abrams will not return to direct the sequel to "Star Wars: Episode VII". Instead, Deadline reports that Rian Johnson will write and direct "Star Wars: Episode VIII". Johnson's past works include "Brick" and, my personal favorite, "Looper". The latter made quite an impression when it was released in 2012, performing very well at the box-office ($176 million worldwide versus a $30 million budget) and being hailed as a new sci-fi classic. Johnson also directed three episodes from the final season of "Breaking Bad".

Furthermore, he will also be given the task of writing a treatment for "Star Wars: Episode IX". It also seems that he will direct the third installment in the new sequel trilogy, although it's still too far in the future to be absolutely certain about that. I have to admit, I very much like that Disney and Lucasfilm are trying to freshen up the franchise with directors like Abrams and Johnson. Time will tell just how well they'll do. In the meantime, "Star Wars: Episode VII" will be released in theaters on December 18th, 2015.
