Box-Office Report: THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, EDGE OF TOMORROW

the fault in our stars and edge of tomorrow box office

The weekend box-office results came in with a bit of a surprise as young adult drama "The Fault in Our Stars" starring Shailene Woodley defeated the very-hyped sci-fi actioner "Edge of Tomorrow" starring Tom Cruise. Not only did the former achieve the No. 1 status, but at a great distance from Cruise's summer blockbuster. "The Fault in Our Stars" opened with an astonishing $48 million, while the high-concept science fiction placed third with $28 million. Not everything is bleak for "Edge of Tomorrow", though, as the movie grossed an additional $111 million overseas, although the $200 million price tag is equally impressive and even harder to earn back. Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent" held relatively strong and dropped to second place with a weekend gross of $35 million, a 50% drop from its opening last week, but still good enough to beat out "Edge of Tomorrow".

New Wide Releases: "The Fault in Our Stars", "Edge of Tomorrow".

Biggest Drop : "A Million Ways to Die in the West" (-56%)

Smallest Drop : "Neighbors" (-34%)
