For a second consecutive weekend the sci-fi thriller "Gravity" starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney stayed ahead of the competition and managed to hold on at the top spot. The film only dropped 21% from its record-breaking opening weekend and has now reached a total of $123 million in just ten days. According to industry experts this is the lowest decline in history for a film that opened above $55 million. So, "Gravity" has just broken a second record. The previous record was held by "The Incredibles" with a drop of 29%.
Facing off against a box-office behemoth like "Gravity", the true story high-seas thriller "Captain Phillips" managed to open in second place with $26 million, a solid enough debut for the $55 million production. The film boasts an Oscar-worthy performance from Tom Hanks and director Paul Greengrass' electrifying direction. The rave reviews and box-office success will give the film a solid boost during the awards season.
The exploitation action film "Machete Kills" placed No.4 with only $3.8 million despite a star-studded cast featuring Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, Sofia Vergara and Antonio Banderas. This is also Robert Rodriguez's worst opening weekend, even worse than the first "Machete" ($11.6 million) and "Spy Kids: All the Time in the World" ($11.4 million).
More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
