Box-Office Report: ELYSIUM, WE'RE THE MILLERS, PLANES and PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS

Matt Damon Jennifer Aniston

Last week's box-office king "2 Guns" was quickly brought down by this past weekend's new releases. The sci-fi actioner "Elysium" and the raunchy comedy "We're the Millers", both R-rated films, fought hard for the top spot and the winner turned out to be "Elysium". The dystopian thriller starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster earned $30 million in 3 days, which barely qualifies as a success, especially considering director Neill Blomkamp's previous film, "District 9", opened with $37 million despite having no star-power and being Blomkamp's debut feature film. "Elysium" was made on a budget of $115 million, which it will barely recover in the next few weeks.

"We're the Millers", starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston, managed to place second over the course of a considerably crowded weekend and earned $28 million during the weekend, which adds up to a total of $38 million over 5 days, swiftly recouperating its $37 million budget.

Disney's "Planes", a spin-off of Pixar's "Cars" franchise, opened at #3 with $22 million, which is good considering its $50 million budget, but definitely not as impressive as a Pixar movie. Far behind, at #4, "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" earned $14 million during the weekend and a total of $23 million since its release, five days ago. This is considerably less than the $31 million opening weekend of "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief". The fantasy adventure cost $90 million to make and it looks unlikely that it will manage to catch up to these costs in the next weeks at the box-office.

"2 Guns", starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, rounds up the top 5 after being pushed back from last week's top spot. The film registered a steep dive due to the heavy competition. The action thriller was made on a budget of $61 million, but only managed to earn back $48 million in 10 days.

More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.
