The sci-fi thriller "Gravity" starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney defied all expectations and opened with an explosive $55.5 million, breaking the October record for an opening weekend which was previously set by "Paranormal Activity 3" ($52.6 million). It's also the best opening for both Bullock and Clooney. A considerable part of these earnings can be attributed to 3D ticket sales. Add to that the $27 million earned overseas and it amounts to a very impressive opening for an original sci-fi film.
The other wide release of the week, "Runner Runner" a thriller starring Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck and Gemma Arterton, performed a lot worse, opening in third place with a gross of $7 million. The film performed somewhat better internationally by grossing $23 million.
