"Mary Poppins Returns" is a sequel to Disney's 1964 classic
"Mary Poppins", based on the book series of the same name by
P.L. Travers. The 54 years passed between the first film and the sequel make it one of the longest gaps in cinematic history.
The sequel is set in 1930s London, twenty-five years after the events of the original film, as magical nanny Mary Poppins (
Emily Blunt) returns to help the now-grown up Banks children, Michael (
Ben Whishaw) and Jane (
Emily Mortimer), navigate a difficult time in their lives.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Pixie Davies, Nathaniel Saleh, Joel Dawson, Julie Walter, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Meryl Streep and
Dick Van Dyke co-star.
The film is nominated for four Golden Globe awards, including Actress - Musical/Comedy (Blunt), Actor - Musical/Comedy (Miranda), Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy, and Score. Blunt also received a Screen Actors Guild nomination, and the National Board of Review chose the film as one of the year's Top Ten films.
"Mary Poppins Returns" opened in theaters on December 19, 2018 and received mostly positive reviews from critics. The film brought in $50 million for the seven-day Christmas total.
