The upcoming James Bond film is undergoing some surprising developments. As previously reported, the new installment had a script written by franchise scribes Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and "'71" helmer Yann Demange was a frontrunner to direct the film.

Now it looks like producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are going to shake things up. "Slumdog Millionaire" and "127 Hours" helmer Danny Boyle is now being strongly considered for the director's chair, but only if he can deliver a better script. To this end, Boyle has reteamed with Oscar nominated "Trainspotting" writer John Hodge, and the new script is expected to be ready in a couple of months.

Apparently the idea was born when Boyle directed the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics which featured Daniel Craig as James Bond and a surprise appearance from Queen Elizabeth II. At that time, Boyle came up with a very specific idea for a new Bond film. This idea seems to have resonated with Broccoli and Wilson, so much so that they shelved Wade & Purvis' script in favor of whatever Boyle can come up with. If things don't work out, then Boyle won't direct the film and the producers will revert to Wade & Purvis' work.

"Bond 25" is set for release on November 5, 2019.
