Joaquin Phoenix in Talks to Play the Joker in Standalone DC Movie

Joaquin Phoenix in talks to play the Joker in standalone DC movie.
Three-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star as The Joker in a standalone DC movie that will be directed by Todd Phillips ("The Hangover").

The film will be an origin story that will take place in the 1980s and will follow the Joker's rise as a mastermind criminal. It's intended to feel more like a gritty crime drama than a comic-book movie, and it will not be a part of the DC Extended Universe. This means Jared Leto can still play the supervillain in the "Suicide Squad" sequel and other DCEU installments.

Phillips will also co-write the script alongside Scott Silver ("The Fighter", "8 Mile"). Although initially rumored that Martin Scorsese would produce the film, his name has not been mentioned in recent reports.

Phoenix can also be seen in Gus Van Sant's dramedy "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot", the thriller "You Were Never Really Here", and as Jesus in the biblical drama "Mary Magdalene".
