Weekend Box-Office: JUSTICE LEAGUE Failed to Meet Expectations With $96M Debut

Despite high expectations for Warner Bros and DC Comics' "Justice League" movie, it ended up slightly below what would have been regarded as an acceptable comic book blockbuster debut, but it did crush the competition over the weekend. Lionsgate's "Wonder" also managed to score an impressive opening weekend.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Obviously there was never any question whether or not "Justice League" could top the weekend charts, but what really mattered was the total weekend gross, and that's where the film kind of disappointed. Opening with $96 million, the film fell below initial projections that hinted at a $110 million debut and scored the lowest opening for a DCEU film, so far. Just to get an idea of just how low it is, the franchise high belongs to "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" with a $166 million opening weekend, while "Wonder Woman" was the previous all-time low with $103.2 million. Internationally "Justice League" grossed $185.5 million from 65 markets, of which $51.7 million from China. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46 on Metacritic), and CinemaScore gave it a "B+" from opening day polls.

The drama "Wonder" opened in second place with a solid $27 million versus a $20 million budget. The adaptation of R.J. Palacio's #1 New York Times bestseller received mostly positive reviews from critics (84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic) and was well liked by moviegoers as CinemaScore reports an "A+" grade, which is a pretty rare occurrence.

Marvel's latest, "Thor: Ragnarok" dropped to third place with $21.7 million after a more severe 61.8% drop, which was probably related to the release of "Justice League". The MCU flick has grossed a total of $247.3 million domestically and $490.7 million overseas.

The comedy sequel "Daddy's Home 2" finished its second weekend in theaters in fourth place with $14.8 million after a 50% drop. This brings the film to a tally of $50.5 million against a $69 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded up by Fox's "Murder on the Orient Express" which dropped 52%, grossing $13.8 million. The Agatha Christie adaptation has now grossed $51.7 million domestically and $96.5 million overseas, which is good news for the $55 million production.

The last of the new wide releses, "The Star", Sony's animated take on the nativity story opened in sixth place with just $10 million. This puts the film in a rough spot right before the holidays, especially with Pixar's "Coco" soon approaching. While the critics had mixed feelings about it (62% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic), it received a much warmer reception from moviegoers according to CinemaScore's "A" grade.

Two smaller releases are still performing very well in the Top 10. The first, A24's "Lady Bird" grossed $2.5 million after expanding into 37 additional theaters, which brings the total location count to 238. It has already earned $4.7 million  and will expand further over the Thanksgiving holiday. Meanwhile, Fox Searchlight's "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" expanded in 49 additional locations and earned $1.1 million from a total of 53 theaters, and will continue to expand each week until December 1st.
