"The Fate of the Furious" continues to outpace its competition and crosses the global $1 billion mark, while one newcomer provides a considerable surprise at the box-office.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The eighth installment in the "Fast & Furious" franchise has grossed another $19.3 million this weekend, securing the #1 position for a third consecutive week. Its domestic gross has reached $192.7 million, but the overseas markets are seeing all the action with a huge $867.6 million total. With the sequel reaching $1 billion worldwide, it has become the fifth title in Universal's portfolio to earn this achievement, alongside "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World".
In second place we have a new wide release, the comedy "How to Be a Latin Lover", which has opened with $12 million from just 1,118 theaters. The film received a solid "A" grade from opening day audiences, according to CinemaScore, but received mixed reviews from critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic).
The big surprise comes from the Tollywood sequel "Baahubali 2: The Conclusion" which opened in third place with a huge $10.1 million from only 425 theaters. That's bigger than any Hollywood limited release I've ever heard of. It's also the largest debut of an Indian film in the U.S.
In fourth place we have the other newcomer, the thriller "The Circle" starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. The film only grossed $9.3 million from 3,163 theaters, which I suppose isn't a disaster for a film that cost only $18 million to produce, but considering the bad reviews (18% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic), and the horrible "D+" it got from CinemaScore, it probably won't be around for very long.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the animated film "The Boss Baby", which has finally withdrawn from second place and grossed $9 million over the weekend for a domestic tally of $148.4 million.
New Wide Releases: "How to be a Latin Lover", "The Circle".
Biggest Drop : "Unforgettable" (-51%)
Smallest Drop : "Going in Style" (-27%)
