Weekend Box-Office: GET OUT Scares Off Competition

weekend-box-office-get-out

The Oscars weekend was pretty light on major new releases, which allowed Blumhouse's new horror film "Get Out" to explode and dominate the box-office, while fellow new arrivals "Rock Dog" and "Collide" failed to make the Top 10.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Jordan Peele's directorial debut "Get Out" scored an impressive $30.5 million from 2,781 theaters. The film only cost $4.5 million to produce, so this is a feat comparable to M. Night Shyamalan's "Split", another Jason Blum production. The film also enjoyed universal praise from critics (100% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a solid response from moviegoers ("A-" on CinemaScore).

In second place we have "The LEGO Batman Movie" with $19 million. The film's domestic total has now reached $133 million, and it has grossed another $93 million overseas.

"John Wick: Chapter Two" finished at #3 with $9 million, climbing one spot and raising its domestic cume to $74.4 million. Internationally it adds another $51.1 million. The film has already surpassed the original's worldwide gross and things are looking ripe for a sequel.

The Matt Damon blockbuster "The Great Wall" dropped one spot to #4 with $8.7 million over the weekend. While the film's domestic total is a minor $34.4 million, it's doing much better overseas where it has grossed $94.6 million.

The Top 5 is rounded up by "Fifty Shades Darker" with $7.7 million. The sequel has registered a steep 62% decline from last week. Its domestic cume is now at $103 million and its worldwide gross has reached $328.3 million, which I guess means we're going to get another Fifty Shades movie.

Last week's new releases "Rock Dog" and "Collide" only managed to gross $3.7 million and $1.5 million, respectively.

The weekend also boosted the performances of Oscar hopefuls "Hidden Figures", "La La Land" and "Lion".

New Wide Releases: "Get Out", "Rock Dog", "Collide".
