"The Fate of the Furious" made a big opening at the box-office on Easter weekend, but I guess that's no surprise. No other films dared to open in the same weekend as Universal's behemoth franchise.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Universal's action sequel, "The Fate of the Furious" dominated the charts, securing the top spot with $100.1 million. This is the second film in the "Fast & Furious" franchise to make a $100 million or more debut alongside "Furious 7", which opened with an even more impressive $147.1 million. The new sequel broke records overseas, however, where it grossed a total of $432.3 million from 60 countries. "The Fate of the Furious" broke the record previously held by "Jurassic World" which opened with $316.7 million internationally, and its worldwide debut of $532.5 million also broke the record held by "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $529 million. The eighth installment in the "Fast & Furious" franchise received an "A" from opening day audiences according to CinemaScore, while critics had mostly mixed feelings about it (64% on Rotten Tomatoes and 56 on Metacritic)
"The Boss Baby" and "Beauty and the Beast" continue their amazing performances in second and third place, with $15.5 million and $13.6 million, respectively. While the animated feature has managed to raise $116.3 million domestically, Disney's live-action remake has grossed 454 million, raising its worldwide cume past the $1 billion milestone.
In fourth place, we have Sony's "Smurfs: The Lost Village", which isn't performing quite like the reboot the studio intended it to be. The film dropped 51%, taking in only $6.5 million this weekend and has now grossed $24.7 million domestically in 10 days. Its international haul is somewhat better at $70 million, and considering its modest $60 million budget, the film has turned a profit.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the comedy "Going in Style" with $6.3 million and a domestic gross of $23.3 million. With another $11.7 million grossed overseas, Warner Bros has managed to earn back its $25 million budget
Fox Searchlight's drama "Gifted" starring Chris Evans has expanded nationwide this weekend, earning $3 million for a #6 finish. Its domestic cume has reached $4.3 million versus a $7 million budget, and the film is scheduled to expand further next week.
New Wide Releases: "The Fate of the Furious".
Biggest Drop : "Ghost in the Shell" (-67.2 %)
Smallest Drop : "Get Out" (-28%)
