Weekend Box-Office: ALIEN COVENANT Narrowly Edges Out GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2

New arrival "Alien: Covenant" managed to beat out "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" for the top spot at the box-office, while the other new wide releases "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" and "Everything, Everything" were too small to matter.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant", the latest chapter in his Alien prequel series, opened at #1 with $36 million. It's a disappointing result for a film that was expected to gross around $40 million in its opening weekend, and quite a drop from the $51 million grossed by its predecessor "Prometheus" in 2012. The film did manage a pretty solid $81.8 million from overseas markets, which is where underwhelming blockbusters hope to recuperate their money these days. Still, the film has one advantage, which is its moderate-by-blockbuster-standards $97 million budget. In fact, it has already earned back that amount and is already turning a profit. "Alien: Covenant" has scored a decent B grade from opening night audiences according to CinemaScore and a mostly positive reception from critics (73% on Rotten Tomatoes and 66 on Metacritic).

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" dropped to #2 with $35 million, crossing the $300 million milestone domestically and reaching $430 million internationally. All of this already adds up to almost the entire worldwide theatrical run of the first "Guardians of the Galaxy".

In third place we have another new release, the young adult romance "Everything, Everything". The film blew away expectations and opened with $12 million versus a $10 million budget. The film received an "A-" from CinemaScore but mixed to negative reviews from critics (43% on Rotten Toamtoes and 52 on Metacritic).

The R-rated comedy "Snatched" dropped a steep 61% and landed at #4 with $7.6 million, bringing its domestic cume to $32.7 million. Overseas the film picked up $7.2 million.

The Top 5 is rounded up by the last of the new wide releases, the sequel "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul". After a disappointing first day opening, expectations were lowered, and the film matched them with a weak $7.2 million debut. The film only cost $22 million to produce, but it's still a low point in the franchise. Previous films have opened with 14.6 million ("Dog Days"), $23.7 million ("Rodrick Rules") and $22.1 million (the first film). "The Long Haul" scored a "B" from CinemaScore and was demolished by critics (19% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 on Metacritic).
