M. Night Shyamalan delivered a new box-office hit as his latest thriller, "Split" topped the charts with an impressive January opening. The Vin Diesel action sequel "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" delivered a decent opening, while the biopic "The Founder" barely made the Top 10. Also, more good news for "Rogue One".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Shyamalan scored a brilliant comeback with "Split", as the film received good reviews and managed a #1 debut with $40.1 million versus a $10 million budget, the fourth largest January opening of all-time, ahead of 2008's "Cloverfield". This is the director's second collaboration with producer Jason Blum following 2015's "The Visit", which opened with $25.4 million and went on to gross $65 million. The film received a "B+" on CinemaScore and currently holds a 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Paramount's "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage" opened in second place with $20 million, which is not as good as the first film's $44.5 million opening, but better than the $12.7 million debut of "xXx: State of the Union". It also brought in another $50.5 million internationally from 53 countries, finishing at #1 in more than half of these. The film cost $85 million to produce. Moviegoers gave it an "A-" according to CinemaScore, while critics generally didn't like it (42% on Rotten Tomatoes).
"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" finished in sixth place this weekend, with $7 million, but the film has reasons to brag as it has just crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide. It has grossed $512.2 million domestically and $499.1 million overseas. "Rogue One" is the 28th film to have ever crossed the milestone, and Disney's fourth film of 2016.
One new release that almost didn't make the Top 10 is the biopic "The Founder". The film grossed $3.7 million from 1,115 theaters, a modest result that somehow doesn't sound so bad when you consider that it only cost $7 million to produce. Still, it's not that good for a Weinstein Co. picture.
New Wide Releases: "Split", "xXx: The Return of Xander Cage", "The Founder".
Biggest Drop : "Sleepless" (-55.6%)
Smallest Drop : "Hidden Figures" (-22.1%)
