With only one new wide release, Disney's "Moana" secured the top spot for a third consecutive weekend. Meanwhile, newcomer "Office Christmas Party" made a decent debut in this rather slow weekend leading up to the release of "Rogue One" next week.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Moana" leads once again with an $18.8 million weekend that brings the film's domestic total to $145 million. The overseas gross is now at $93.8 million.
Close behind in second place is the R-rated comedy "Office Christmas Party", which opened with $17.5 million. The film also opened in 49 markets that brought in $16.4 million. It may not sound like it's a thundering debut, but it may be more impressive than initially thought. According to Forbes, the film now holds a strange record of sorts, that of the biggest opening weekend for a holiday-themed movie released in December. Not bad for an R-rated Christmas movie. Also, its production budget is estimated at $45 million, so it's not going to have a hard time turning a profit. "Office Christmas Party" received a "B" from CinemaScore and a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place we have "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" with $10.7 million, bringing the film extremely close to the $200 million mark domestically. The worldwide total now stands at $680 million.
The sci-fi film "Arrival" proves to be very resilient. After dropping just 22.9%, the film grossed $5.6 million in its fifth weekend. The film has now grossed $81.4 million domestically and $48.4 million overseas.
"Doctor Strange" rounds up the Top 5 with $4.6 million. It has now reached a domestic gross of $222 million and has brought in $645 million worldwide.
