"Deadpool" continues a very strong performance at the box-office while new arrivals "Risen" and "The Witch" open strong.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
As expected, "Deadpool" is still the #1 movie with a weekend gross of $55 million. This adds up to a domestic total of $235 million. Overseas, the film took in an additional $256 million. Not bad for a movie that only cost $58 million to make. That should be a lesson to all studios about what a movie needs in order to be successful. And it's not just about cuss words.
While "Kung Fu Panda 3" is still holding on in second place, we also have a couple of newcomers that have made a strong impression. First, the religious drama "Risen" which brough in $11.8 million. Maybe it's not as strong as other recent faith-based flicks like "Son of God" and "Heaven is For Real", but with some decent reviews and a relatively positive reaction from audicenes, it could go on to make more money through March and early April.
The second new release of the week is the Sundance horror film "The Witch" which opened with $8.6 million versus a $3.5 million budget. This was the widest opening for a film produced by A24 with 2,046 theaters.
The last new release, the Jesse Owens biopic "Race" finished the weekend with a modest $7.2 million, which is a bit short of its already low expectations.
New Wide Releases: "Race", "Risen", "The Witch".
Biggest Drop : "Zoolander 2" (-60%)
Smallest Drop : "Kung Fu Panda 3" (-36.7%)
