Weekend Box-Office: STAR WARS Crosses $700 Million Domestically

With the first weekend of 2016 behind us, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is really close to becoming the highest grossing domestic release in history, without accounting for inflation, of course. Meanwhile, "The Hateful Eight" did okay as it expanded nationwide.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at #1 scored $88.3 million over the weekend and reached a domestic total of $740 million, according to the early estimates. The film is very close to the all-time domestic record held by 2009's "Avatar" which grossed $760 million. Now, if we're adjusting for inflation, "Avatar" actually grossed $837 million by today's standards, and it's not even in the historical top 10. The all-time record holder with inflation taken into account is "Gone With the Wind" with $1.7 billion domestically, followed by the original 1977 "Star Wars" with $1.5 billion (check out the full chart here). That's pretty tough to beat. Also "Avatar" grossed $2 billion just from international markets, while "The Force Awakens" only managed $770 million, albeit in a short period of time. If the seventh installment in Disney's freshly acquired franchise can sustain its run for another month or so, it will certainly conquer the worldwide gross record as well.

In second place, the comedy "Daddy's Home" is still going strong with a weekend gross of $29 million and a domestic total of $93.6 million versus a $50 million budget, which is pretty impressive, especially with "Star Wars" in theaters.

At #3, Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" opened in 2,474 theaters and grossed $16.2 million, which isn't really that impressive. It's still a difficult time of the year to assume that the movie will fail, so it's safer to wait until next week to see how it really does.

The Tina Fey and Amy Poehler  comedy "Sisters" is also doing fine in fourth place. The film grossed an additional $12.5 million which brings its domestic total to a solid $61.7 million. Its production budget is estimated at $30 million.

The Top 5 is rounded up by "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip" which everyone seems keen to ignore, but it has the smallest weekend drop of the week (10.2%) and despite a very slow start, it has managed to sustain a steady pace. The film grossed $11.8 million over the weekend and has now grossed $67.3 million in the U.S. and $24 million overseas versus an estimated budget of $90 million. It seemed impossible in its opening weekend, but the blasted thing actually has a chance to become profitable.

New Wide Releases: "The Hateful Eight".

Biggest Drop : "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (-40.8%)
