Weekend Box-Office: DEADPOOL Smashes Records

The new comic book adaptation "Deadpool" wreaked havoc at the box-office this weekend while new arrivals "How to Be Single" and "Zoolander 2" didn't break any records.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Deadpool" stormed the box-office with an unexpected $135 million debut, the largest opening weekend for an R-rated film, a record previously set by "The Matrix Reloaded" with $91 million. It's also the largest February opening, demolishing the record previously held by "Fifty Shades of Grey" ($85 million). Not to mention the fact that the Merc with a Mouth also broke the record for 20th Century Fox's own weekend opening which was initially held by "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" ($108 million). The Ryan Reynolds starrer is expected to end the four-day President's Day weekend with an estimated $150 million.

"Kung Fu Panda 3" held on remarkably well, dropping only 7.5% for a $19.6 million second place weekend.  The animated feature's domestic gross has now reached $93.9 million.

In third place we have the new romantic comedy "How to Be Single" which grossed $18.7 million and is looking to reach $20 million for the four-day weekend. The production budget is estimated at $38 million.

Opening in fourth place is the comedy sequel "Zoolander 2" with a weak $15.6 million, exactly the same amount earned by the first film when it opened in September 2001. "Zoolander" made that same amount of money despite the obvious dilemma of releasing a comedy so soon after 9/11. The sequel also cost twice as much as the original to produce, so that doesn't help, either.

"The Revenant" rounds up the top 5 with a $6.9 million weekend, bringing the Oscar hopeful's domestic total to $159 million.
