Nobody expected "The Revenant" to pose any threat to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", but the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer made an aggressive debut and while it wasn't enough to take first place, it was nevertheless impressive. The new release "The Forest" also performed quite well for a small budget horror in January.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is still the #1 movie of the week at the box-office with a $41.6 million weekend gross which adds up to a $812 million domestic total. The sequel has become the first film to ever gross $800 million in the U.S., which is somewhat debatable, since the historical rankings should include inflation adjustments before claiming to break any records. The film also opened in China  and is off to a strong start with $53 million in the first two days. Worldwide the film is the third highest grossing release of all-time with over $1.73 billion.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "The Revenant" settled for second place, but definitely proved that star-power is still relevant these days. The recent winner of three Golden Globes scored $38 million over its first nationwide weekend. This is DiCaprio's fourth largest opening of all-time. It's interesting to see how the imminent Oscar nominations will help improve these already impressive box-office figures.

The horror film "The Forest" starring Natalie Dormer also did well with a $13 million debut versus a $10 million budget. Future prosopects might be rather bleak, however, because of the negative reviews that the film is getting from both critics and audiences.

Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight" is having a hard time at the box-office. The film fell short of expectations and only grossed $6.35 million over the weekend. The domestic total has now reached $41.4 million.

New Wide Releases: "The Forest", "The Revenant".
