It was a close race, but "Furious 7" is the No. 1 movie at the box-office for a third consecutive week, while new releases "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" and "Unfriended" both performed very well. More after the jump.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Furious 7" continues its incredible dominance over the box-office. This weekend, the film added $29 million to its impressive domestic gross and it has now reached a total of $1.1 billion, becoming Universal's highest grossing picture and the fastest movie in history to reach the billion mark (17 days). Talk about fast and furious.
Despite the strong hold that "Furious 7" has over the box-office, it was a good weekend for wide releases. Sony's comedy sequel "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" justified the need for a new installment by opening with $24 million at No. 2, which is better than initial projection, despite a Rottentomatoes.com score of 0%. The film cost only $30 million to produce.
Universal is on a hot streak, as its new slasher horror with a twist "Unfriended" came third with a $16 million debut, once again, beyond initial projections for the weekend. The film is another collaboration between Universal and Blumhouse and Timur Bekmambetov ("Wanted") served as producer.
Disneynature's new documentary "Monkey Kingdom" entered the box-office in seventh place with $4.7 million, exactly the same as last year's "Bears" which opened with $4.7 million, but below the studio's highest grossing feature "Chimpanzee" which scored a $10.6 million debut in 2012.
New Wide Releases: "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" ,"Unfriended", "Monkey Kingdom".
Biggest Drop : "Furious 7" (-51%)
Smallest Drop : "Woman in Gold" (-16%)
