It was a good weekend for both the PG-rated animated family film "Home" and the R-rated comedy "Get Hard". Both films opened strongly in first and second place, respectively, with plenty of good business left over for last week's No. 1 movie "Insurgent" and Disney's "Cinderella". Also, the indie horror film "It Follows" made a spectacular entry into the top 10.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
For DreamWorks Animation's "Home", the weekend was very generous. The film opened with $54 million domestically and an additional $47 million from overseas markets. This is the best opening for the studio since "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" in 2012 and the third-best for an original feature after "Kung Fu Panda" ($60 million) and "Monsters Vs. Aliens" ($59.3 million).
The Will Ferrell - Kevin Hart team-up "Get Hard" couldn't score such high numbers, but made a solid debut in second place with $34.6 million, which also happens to be the largest R-rated opening for both stars. Overseas the film didn't perform very well with only $4.6 million from nine countries.
The horror film "It Follows" expanded nationwide this weekend and earned $4 million from 1,218 locations, landing in fifth place. The film has received solid reviews from critics and performed surprisingly well during its limited run.
Last week's No. 1 movie "The Divergent Series: Insurgent" dropped to No. 3 with a weekend gross of $22 million, raising its total cume to $86 milliom domestically. The film is currently doing much better internationally with a total of $93 million.
Disney's live-action adaptation "Cinderella" reached $150 million in the U.S. and is also dominating international markets. The film has grossed $336 million worldwide.
New Wide Releases: "Home", "Get Hard".
Biggest Drop : "The Gunman" (-59%)
Smallest Drop : "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (-34%)
