Disney's fairy tale adaptation "Cinderella" stormed the box-office with a $70 million debut, while Liam Neeson's latest action thriller "Run All Night" flopped.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Disney's live-action version of its classic fairy tale adaptation, "Cinderella", conquered the box-office with an impressive $70 million domestically and $62 million from overseas markets. The $95 million production directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Downton Abbey's Lily James and Cate Blanchett is the newest addition in the studio's line-up of reimagined adaptations of their own classic animated features, following "Maleficent" and "Alice in Wonderland".
This week's other wide release, the Liam Neeson starrer "Run All Night" was not so lucky, but still opened in second place. The film only took in $11 million, which is much less than previous collaborations between Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra. "Unknown" opened in 2011 with $21 million, and "Non-Stop" grossed $28 million in its opening weekend. It's also Neeson's worst box-office performance since his rise as an action star, although last year's "A Walk Among Tombstones" came pretty close with its $12.7 million debut. It could be that people are getting a bit tired of Neeson's tough guy routine, but I personally feel that the movie didn't show much promise, both in terms of its premise and the marketing strategy.
New Wide Releases: "Cinderella", "Run All Night".
Biggest Drop : "Chappie" (-56%)
Smallest Drop : "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (-25%)
