The weekend was dominated by "Insurgent", the newest installment in the "Divergent" franchise, but even if it managed to top the box-office, it didn't exactly perform as well as expected. Meanwhile, Sean Penn's action star debut "The Gunman" flopped.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Insurgent Box-Office
"The Divergent Series: Insurgent" pulled off a $54 million opening weekend, even though its Friday gross was a bit worrisome. Even so, the film failed to top the debut of last year's "Divergent" which opened with $54.6 million, which is a pretty bad sign for the franchise. Usually sequels are supposed to perform better than the original film, if audiences respond well. And it's nowhere near the strength of other Young Adult adaptations like "The Hunger Games". "Insurgent" also cost Lionsgate $110 million to produce, compared to the $85 million budget of "Divergent". The weekend results of next week will be all the more important if there is any hope for "Insurgent" to at least equal the total gross of its predecessor.

This weekend's other wide release, "The Gunman", Sean Penn's attempt to start up an action star career, flopped with a disastrous $5 million which is even far from the disappointing debut of Liam Neeson's "Run All Night" ($11 million). The Pierre Morel directed action thriller also suffered at the hands of the critics who ravaged the film (14% on Rottentomatoes.com).

A semi-wide release worth mentioning is the faith-based drama "Do You Believe ?" which grossed $4 million from 1,320 theaters. While not as impressive as other similar Christian films like "Son of God", "God's Not Dead" or "Heaven is for Real", it nevertheless placed sixth among some pretty big contenders.

New Wide Releases: "The Divergent Series: Insurgent", "The Gunman", "Do You Believe ?".
