Now that Sony Pictures is under new leadership, we have some new movement on the franchise front. It seems that the studio is planning to deliver a female spinoff based on "21 Jump Street" and "22 Jump Street", while series stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill will continue playing the same characters in a crossover with the "Men in Black" franchise.
Honestly, at first glance, it looks crazy. However, given how Phil Lord and Chris Miller managed to turn an 1980s TV series into two awesome movies that benefited from self-awareness, maybe this can work, as well. Except that "Men in Black", despite a strong comedic tone, is pretty far from the levels of parody on display in "Jump Street". I'm not sure how the two will mesh.
Also, we don't actually have information that Lord and Miller will be involved in the making of these new movies, and they're really in demand right now with a line-up of projects that include a potential "Ghostbusters" spinoff starring Tatum and Chris Pratt that would eventually merge with Paul Feig's all-female "Ghostbusters", Warner Bros' "The Flash" movie, an animated "Spider-Man" movie for Sony, and "The LEGO Movie" sequel.
You know what ? The franchise market has grown incredibly confusing lately with all this spinoff business. Wouldn't it be better if studios would just focus on original ideas instead of trying to mash-up all these different franchises ?
