Happy Halloween, dear readers ! In case you've missed them this past week, here are the Halloween reviews I've posted throughout the past seven days :

RED 2 - August 2, 2013

The sequel to the 2010 hit movie starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Mary-Louise Parker, about a gang of retired spies (Retired Extremely Dangerous) who are thrown back into the assassination game when a plot to murder them begins to surface. From what I've heard so far, the sequel will feature some of characters from the first movie, who will take their business to Europe this time.

ENDER'S GAME - March 15, 2013.

This sci-fi epic is based on the first of Orson Scott Card's Ender trilogy books. The movie is produced Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman ("Transformers", "Star Trek"). Here is a synopsis for the novel :
"In order to develop a secure defense against a hostile alien race’s next attack, government agencies breed child geniuses and train them as soldiers. A brilliant young boy, Andrew “Ender” Wiggin lives with his kind but distant parents, his sadistic brother Peter, and the person he loves more than anyone else, his sister Valentine. Peter and Valentine were candidates for the soldier-training program but didn’t make the cut—young Ender is the Wiggin drafted to the orbiting Battle School for rigorous military training.

Ender’s skills make him a leader in school and respected in the Battle Room, where children play at mock battles in zero gravity. Yet growing up in an artificial community of young soldiers Ender suffers greatly from isolation, rivalry from his peers, pressure from the adult teachers, and an unsettling fear of the alien invaders. His psychological battles include loneliness, fear that he is becoming like the cruel brother he remembers, and fanning the flames of devotion to his beloved sister.

Is Ender the general Earth needs? But Ender is not the only result of the genetic experiments. The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Ender’s two older siblings are every bit as unusual as he is, but in very different ways. Between the three of them lie the abilities to remake a world. If, that is, the world survives."

BROKEN CITY - January 18, 2013

"Broken City" is a noir drama directed by Allen Hughes ("The Book of Eli", "From Hell"). The story focuses on a New York detective (Mark Wahlberg), hired by the mayor (Russel Crowe) to find out the identity of his wife's lover. When the lover is found dead, things start to complicate for the detective, who find himself knee-deep in one of those noir conspiracies. The movie also stars Catherine Zeta Jones as the mayor's unfaithful wife.

MAGIC MIKE - June 29, 2012

Steven Soderbergh returns to comedy for "Magic Mike", a movie about a male stripper (Alex Pettyfer), which is based in part on Channing Tatum's days as a stripper. Tatum will play Pettyfer's mentor in the movie. Also starring are Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello, Gabriel Iglesias, Adam Rodriguez and Olivia Munn.

A few days ago we got the news that the ambitious adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" was finally green-lit by Universal, with Ron Howard directing and Javier Bardem in the lead role. It took a little budget trimming to get the deal done, but fans can finally rest easy. Today, further details started to surface. Producer Brian Grazer, in an MTV interview, stated that while he and Howard are still figuring out the particulars of developing the three movies, the TV series, which will fill in the gaps in between movies, will begin production in HBO's creative environment. This is very good news, because cable has always been a medium that allows virtually unrestricted levels of violence, sex and profanity. Although I have a feeling that over-the-top violence won't matter if the series fails to entertain, it's nice to know that they won't be cutting stuff out like they did with "The Stand".

A while back, Universal pulled the plug on the epic three movie and two TV series adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower". Ron Howard was set to direct and Javier Bardem to star in the lead role. Production was delayed until the studio finally decided to stop it for good because they had issues with the estimated budget. Now, much like Gore Verbinski's "The Lone Ranger", which was resurrected after severe budget cuts, "The Dark Tower" seems to have reached a similarly favorable decision from Universal. According to producer Brian Grazer, in a recent interview :
"We found a way to cut out $45 million out of the budget without changing the scope and actually giving it a good ending,” Grazer said, suggesting a heavily re-worked approach. “In the $140 million draft, the ending wasn’t quite as satisfying. Now, we’ve got $45 million, $50 million out of the way and a really satisfying ending. It’s gonna get made."

"The Dark Tower" is a series of seven (soon to be eight) novels written by Stephen King. The first of the books, called "The Gunslinger" follows a man named Roland Deschain in his quest to discover the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Ronald is part of an ancient order called gunslingers and the world he inhabits, which is somewhat similar to the American Old West, is undergoing a series of strange changes as nations are torn apart by war.
