It seems Fox has ordered a pilot episode for a future TV series based on the Marvel comic books featuring Frank Castle, a Vietnam veteran whose family was killed by the mob, which prompted him to become The Punisher, a ruthless vigilante who guns down the bad guys of New York City. This new series comes after three different attempts at forging a big-screen Punisher franchise. Three different actors portrayed Castle, Dolph Lundgren in 1989, Thomas Jane in 2004 and Ray Stevenson in 2008. Fans of the comics will have to overlook a certain change to the character's profile. Frank Castle is now an NYPD detective, who only moonlights as a vigilante, which eliminates the character's war veteran background. It is unknown if his family's death will still be part of the character's developement, but I think it will (or should), because the trauma itself is instrumental in Castle's psychological decay, which turns him into judge, jury and executioner for the criminal elements of NY. The series is described as an "hour-long procedural". Here's hoping that doesn't mean it'll be a "Dexter" rip off.
