"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" and "Mufasa: The Lion King" battled it out over the weekend, but the former ended up conquering the pre-holiday frame by far, while Disney's prequel failed to impress. Meanwhile, the faith-based post-apocalyptic drama "Homestead" broke into the Top 5.

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" topped the charts with $60.1 million from 3,761 theaters, which is less than the second installment's $72.1 million debut, but higher than the first film's $58 million opening. The movie will make its major international debut on Christmas Day. The threequel received a positive reception from both critics (88% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
"Mufasa: The Lion King" on the other hand dropped the ball, opening in second place with a disappointing $35.4 million from 4,100 theaters. That's a major drop from the 2019 remake's $191.7 million domestic debut, but also lower than the 1994 original's $40.8 million debut (unadjusted for inflation). Overseas, it's doing a little better with $90.2 million, which brings the worldwide total to $125.6 million against a budget of $200 million. The film's critical reception was mixed-to-negative (55% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers seemed to enjoy it ("A-" CinemaScore).
"Wicked finished its fifth weekend in third place with $14.1 million, down 37.5% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $384.5 million domestically and $188.4 million internationally, which adds up to a total of $572.9 million worldwide.
"Moana 2", now in its fourth week, dropped to #4 and grossed $13.2 million over the weekend. The film dropped 50.2%. THe domestic total has reached $359.1 million, and with another $433.4 million grossed overseas, its global cume is now at $792.5 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Angel Studios' "Homestead" which opened with $6 million from 1,886 theaters. The film's critical reception was mostly negative (38% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
