"Wicked" soared at the weekend box office and triumphed over "Gladiator II", but the latter was no slouch either, securing a hefty debut. Overall, "Glicked" drove the North American box office towards a 79% improvement over the pre-Thanksgiving frame last year when "The Hunger Games: Blalad of Songbirds" opened with $115.5 million.

The musical "Wicked" conquered the box office charts with $112.5 million from 3,888 theaters. The film broke the record for the biggest opening weekend for a film based on a Broadway adaptation domestically and globally, beating previous record-holders "Les Misérables" and "Into the Woods". It also has the best opening for a non-sequel film this year, and the biggest domestic opening for a pop star, beating Lady Gaga's "A Star is Born" ($42.5 million). Overall it ranks as 2024's third biggest domestic debut, behind "Deadpool & Wolverine" and "Inside Out 2".
Overseas, "Wicked" added another $50 million for a global debut of $162.5 million. The film's budget is estimated at around $150 million. The musical received a stellar reception from both critics and moviegoers (90% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
"Gladiator II" opened in second place with $55 million from 3,573 theaters, securing the record for the highest November start for an R-rated film. The sequel already raked in an impressive $87 million international debut last weekend, and this week the overseas cume has reached $165.5 million, adding up to a worldwide total of $220.5 million.
The first "Gladiator" opened with $34.8 million in May 2000, and went on to gross $187.7 million in North America and $465.5 million worldwide against a $103 million budget. It also won five Academy Awards including Best Picture. "Gladiator II" has a heftier $250 million budget, and probably much less chances of getting a Best Picture Oscar. "Gladiator II" received a lukewarm reception from both critics (71% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("B" CinemaScore).
Dwayne Johnson's Christmas action comedy "Red One" finished its sophomore frame in third place with $13.2 million, dropping a massive 58.8% from its disappointing debut. The $250 million movie has now grossed $52.8 million domestically and another $65.2 million internationally. That's a worldwide total of $118 million.
Angel Studios' historical drama "Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin." opened in fourth place with a disappointing $5 million from 1,900 theaters. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (59% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a positive reception from moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Venom: The Last Dance" with $3.8 million, down 47.1% from the previous frame. After five weeks in theaters, the film's domestic total has reached $133.7 million, and it also raked in $322.6 million from foreign markets. That adds up to $456.3 million worldwide.
