"Avatar: The Way of Water" easily dominated the box-office in its second weekend, even though Storm Elliott shut down a lot of theaters across the country. Christmas Eve earnings did hit a historical low point, and the overall box-office weekend is estimated at around $82.8 million, a sharp decline from last year's $144 million. New releases "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish", "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "Babylon" either underperformed, or outright flopped.

James Cameron's "Avatar" sequel topped the weekend charts with $56 million, dropping 58%. The film's domestic total has reached $280 million after 11 days, but is lagging behind films like "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever", "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" and "Top Gun: Maverick" for the same time frame. However, if the sequel matches the orginal's performance, it will probably be around for many, many months, so the next few weeks will be interesting to watch. Overseas, the film is doing a lot better, already crossing the $600 million mark (42% drop), which brings its worldwide total to $881.3 million. As soon as it crosses the $1 billion mark, it will become the second highest grossing movie of 2022, behind "Top Gun: Maverick" ($1.4 billion).
The animated "Shrek" spinoff sequel "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" scored a modest debut in second place with $11.4 milion for the 3-day and $18.6 million for the 4-day from 4,099 theaters. The film's domestic total is now at $24.7 million. Overseas it raked in $32.5 million. While not an impressive debut, $57.1 million worldwide is not that bad, especially considering the box-office will pick up post-Christmas, and it received a strong reception from both critics (95% Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("A" CinemaScore). Also, it cost $90 million to produce, a modest budget compared to other CG-animated films.
The biopic "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody" failed to impress with a third place debut. The film raked in $5.3 million for the 3-day and $7.5 million for the 4-day from 3,625 theaters. The film's budget is reportedly around $45 million. The film received a negative reception from critics (46% Rotten Tomatoes), but audiences generally enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
In fourth place we find Paramount's period epic "Babylon" which tanked with around $3.5 million from 3,343 theaters. This is by all accounts an epic disaster as the film carries a hefty $110 million price tag. It's a flop comparable to that of "Amsterdam" earlier this year. The movie also received less-than-favorable reviews from critics (56% Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers were also left disappointed ("C+" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" with $3 milion. The film dropped 43.5%. It's domestic total has reached $425.6 million, while overseas it adds another $373.8 million for a worldwide total of $801.1 million.
