The adventure comedy "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" is filmmaker Terry Gilliam's infamous film based on Miguel de Cervantes' classic novel "Don Quixote". The reason why the film is "infamous" is that it took Gilliam no less than 29 years to see it realized.

The film stars Adam Driver as Toby Grisoni a disillusioned advertising director who is pulled into a world of time-jumping fantasy by a Spanish shoemaker (Jonathan Pryce) who believes himself to be Don Quixote, and Grisoni his trusted squire, Sancho Panza. Stellan Skarsgard, Olga Kurylenko, Joana Ribeiro and Oscar Jaenada co-star.

The project's inception began in 1989, but it wasn't until 1998 that Gilliam succeeded in securing funding. At the time it had a budget of $32.1 million and the cast included Johnny Depp, Jean Rochefort and Vanessa Paradis. Filming began in 2000, but a series of unfortunate disasters and illnesses eventually shut down the production and got the project cancelled indefinitely. Gilliam's woes became the subject of the 2002 documentary "Lost in La Mancha".

Repeated attempts were made to resurrect the film, but nothing materialized until March 2017, when it was announced that Gilliam finally started filming. The Quixote curse was not over, however, as once the finished film had premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and in French theaters, the filmmaker found himself unable to release it worldwide due to a legal dispute with former producer Paulo Branco. Gilliam and Branco had clashed before during filming, as the producer wanted more control over the production. When Branco shut down production, Gilliam continued filming and finished the film with new producers.

"The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" was eventually released in Belgium, Spain and Portgual. It also received a limited release in the U.S. and Canada on April 10, 2019.
