Newcomer "10 Cloverfield Lane" was a solid contender this weekend but still no match for Disney's animated behemoth "Zootopia". The rest of the new releases, "The Perfect Match", "The Young Messiah" and "The Brothers Grimsby" barely made it into the bottom half of the Top 10.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Zootopia" is still the #1 movie of the week with $50 million over the weekend. The animated feature grossed $142.6 million domestically in its first ten days and another $288.7 million overseas. China alone brought in $56.5 million for Disney.
In second place, the surprise sequel "10 Cloverfield Lane" scored a strong $25.2 million debut. While "Cloverfield" opened with $40 million in 2008, it would be hard to compare the two as they are two very different films and the sequel didn't have much of a marketing campaign due to all the secrecy. "10 Cloverfield Lane" is also a much cheaper movie with a $15 million budget compared to the first one's $25 million.
While "Deadpool" is still holding at #3, last week's "London Has Fallen" dropped two places to #4 with $10.6 million over the weekend for a domestic total of $38.8 million. Another one of last week's new entries, the Tina Fey starrer "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" rounds up the Top 5 with $4.6 million and a total of $14.5 million.
The other new wide releases of the week failed to impress audiences. The new romantic comedy "The Perfect Match" opened in sixth place with $4.1 million, the religious drama "The Young Messiah" made it into seventh place with 3.4 million and "The Brothers Grimsby" finished eighth with $3.2 million. While the first two movies were in fact semi-wide releases (925 and 1,761 theaters, respectively), the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy also known simply as "Grimsby" is a considerable flop for Sony because it opened in 2,235 theaters.
New Wide Releases: "10 Cloverfield Lane", "The Perfect Match", "The Young Messiah", "The Brothers Grimsby".
Biggest Drop : "Gods of Egypt" (-51%)
Smallest Drop : "Zootopia" (-33%)
