"Minions" exploded in theaters this weekend with an impressive debut while "Jurassic World" once again outpaced "Inside Out".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Universal has managed to top the charts in a big way for a third time this year with "Minions", their "Despicable Me" spinoff, which grossed $115.2 million in its first three days domestically. Overseas, the animated film took in another $280 million. "Minions" has obtained the second-best animated opening of all time, behind "Shrek the Third" ($121.6 million). It did however score the biggest opening for a 3D animated film, both for the weekend, and opening day (Friday - $46.2 million). Universal is also breaking records, becoming the studio with the quickest ascent to $3 billion in international grosses. The studio's other two 2015 record-breakers are "Jurassic World" and "Furious 7" which grossed 1.4 and 1.5 billion worldwide. And the former is far from done.
"Jurassic World" is once again ahead of Pixar's "Inside Out", after last week, the latter seemed to have an edge over the dino thriller. The "Jurassic Park" reboot has grossed $18.1 million this weekend and is close to reaching $600 million domestically. Pixar's latest animated adventure has grossed $17 million over the last three days, and has now reached a domestic total of $283.6 million, with overseas ticket sales reaching $151.8 million.
Meanwhile, the other new wide releases of the week, the horror film "The Gallows" and the sci-fi thriller "Self/Less" both made minor debuts. While the former grossed $10 million versus a $100.000 budget, the latter only grossed $5.3 million versus a $26 million budget.
New Wide Releases: "Minions", "The Gallows", "Self/Less".
Biggest Drop : "Ted 2" (-50%)
Smallest Drop : "Magic Mike XXL" (-25%)
