Weekend Box-Office: PITCH PERFECT 2 Runs MAD MAX Off the FURY ROAD

Even though "Mad Max: Fury Road" received a very buzz-worthy reception from critics, in the end the reboot was derailed by the sequel "Pitch Perfect 2" which had no problems securing the top spot. In the end though, "Mad Max" still has plenty to be proud of.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Pitch Perfect 2" proved to have quite a fanbase as the film opened with $70.3 million, basically surpassing the first film's entire domestic gross in just three days. It's also a huge success for Elizabeth Banks who made her feature film directorial debut with this sequel.  An additional $38 million were grossed from international markets. And, the most important aspect is that the film cost less than $30 million to produce.

Meanwhile, "Mad Max: Fury Road" ranked second with $44.4 million domestically and $65 million internationally, a solid result for a franchise that never really earned spectacular amounts of money in theaters. Here's what the previous films earned, with the obligatory inflation adjustment: the first "Mad Max" movie grossed  26 million in 1980, "The Road Warrior" earned $65.3 million in 1982 and "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" scored $82.8 million in 1985. "Mad Max: Fury Road" holds the highest opening weekend gross of the four films. So, while the new film hasn't landed at the top of the box-office, I'm sure Warner Bros is pleased and it's one hell of a comeback for George Miller.

Knocked back to No.3, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is still going strong. The film earned another $38 million this weekend, while its worldwide cume has reached 1.1 billion iin 17 days. Marvel's film has become 2015's #1 film, so far.
