Box-Office: TOMORROWLAND Lackluster Debut on Memorial Day Weekend

There were certainly high hopes for Disney's "Tomorrowland", but all of them have now faded as the $190 million blockbuster scored a minor debut which barely topped the box office during a Memorial Day weekend that proved surprisingly slow. The horror remake "Poltergeist" made a decent debut, while "Pitch Perfect 2" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" continue to impress.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Tomorrowland" starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson proved to be a major disappointment for Disney, even though it secured the top spot this weekend. The film opened with $32.7 million over the first three days, and went on to gross 41.7 million in four days. The sci-fi adventure also opened in 65 other countries and added $26.7 million to its worlwide total. Overall, it's an extremely poor debut for a very expensive project. Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" is still the Memorial Day record holder with $139 million in 2007.

The Sam Raimi produced remake "Poltergeist" provided a change of pace for the weekend and opened with $23 million in its first three days. Its domestic total now stands at $27 million in four days.

In second place we have "Pitch Perfect 2". The sequel almost pushed "Tomorrowland" away from the top spot with $30.8 million. That would have been a bad day for Disney. The film's domestic total has reached $117 million, with an addition of $61 million from overseas markets.

In third place, "Mad Max: Fury Road" proves to be an even stronger contender. The reboot grossed $24.8 million over the weekend, a respectable 45% drop from its opening weekend and it has now taken in $95 million domestically. Internationally the film is doing even better with a $124 million gross.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron" has crossed the $400 million milestone in the U.S. and has now grossed $1.1 billion worldwide. There's still more work to be done before it can catch up to "Furious 7" and its $1.5 billion cume.

New Wide Releases: "Poltergeist", "Tomorrowland".
