While Marvel's recent superhero flick "Ant-Man" managed to beat all competition, it proved to be somewhat of a disappointment at the box-office. Meanwhile, the Amy Schumber comedy "Trainwreck" surprised everyone.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Ant-Man" was a difficult movie to sell from the start. It had an unknown protagonist superhero, a pretty silly gimmick, and a troubled production. The fact that it still managed to rank first and gross $58 million is something, although it was expected to take in between $60 and $65 million. This is the second worst opening of the twelve Marvel movies released so far. The absolute worst was "The Incredible Hulk" with $55 million. The same risk was taken by Marvel last year with Guardians of the Galaxy", but that one eventually payed off with a $94 million debut. "Ant-Man" may have arrived at a time when a certain genre-fatigue might have set in, or it may simply have failed to attract the uninitiated. Either way, it's not a disaster, just a small setback for the studio.
Universal's "Minions" dropped to second place with $50 million over the weekend, which translates to a 56% drop from last week.
The bigger surprise comes from the Amy Schumer comedy "Trainwreck" which opened third with a strong $30.2 million. This is the second-best opening weekend for director Judd Apatow. His best debut was with "Knocked Up" ($30.9 million) in 2007.
Another noteworthy performance was that of Bill Condon's "Mr. Holmes" which made the top 10 with $2.49 million from just 363 screens.
New Wide Releases: "Ant-Man", "Trainwreck".
Biggest Drop : "Terminator: Genisys" (-61%)
Smallest Drop : "Inside Out" (-34%)
