Although it managed to storm the box-office and had no problem securing the top spot, the sequel "Avengers: Age of Ultron" failed to break any records and even fell short of its predecessor's opening weekend.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Despite the harsh observations above, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" did in fact explode this weekend with a domestic gross of $187 million. Sure, it's less than what 2012's "The Avengers" grossed when it opened ($207 million), but it's still the second highest debut of all time. Of course, the Floyd Mayweather - Manny Pacquiao fight probably had something to do with these results, as many have observed, but maybe it's also a sign of fatigue for the franchise. Either way, the next few weeks should boost the film's already impressive worldwide total which has now reached $626 million after being released overseas 12 days ago.
Since the competition had no chance against "Avengers", the rest of the box-office results are modest. "The Age of Adaline" climbed to No. 2 with $6 million over the weekend, while "Furious 7" tumbled to No. 3 with $6.1 million after four weeks at the top. At No. 4 we have "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" with $5.5 million.
On the limited release front, "Far From the Madding Crowd" starring Carey Mulligan showed some strong potential. The Thomas Hardy adaptation grossed $172,000 from ten locations. The Kristen Wiig starrer "Welcome to Me" grossed $38,168 from 2 locations, and the documentary "Iris" also performed well with $63,500 from 6 theaters.
In other news, Disney's "Cinderella" made a comeback in the top 10 and landed in sixth place with $2.3 million in what is probably one of the best performances on any of the old releases.
New Wide Releases: "Avengers: Age of Ultron".
Biggest Drop : "Unfriended" (-67%)
Smallest Drop : "Cinderella" (-14%)
