As expected, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" stormed the box-office this weekend and managed to break a record in the process. The sequel opened with an estimated $161 million, beating the first film's $152 million debut and it is currently the highest grossing November debut of all time, ahead of the $142 million grossed by "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" in its opening weekend. As far as general opening weekend rankings go, "Catching Fire" is the fourth biggest debut, surpassed only by "The Avengers" ($207 million), "Iron Man 3" ($174 million) and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($169 million), films which also benefited from the higher prices of the 3D tickets. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" also performed well overseas, grossing an additional $146 million, which adds up to a worldwide total of $307 million, already close to half of the first film's worldwide total of $691 million.
The Vince Vaughn comedy "Delivery Man" failed to generate much resistance against "Catching Fire". The film opened in fourth place, grossing only $8 million and becoming yet another box-office underperformer for the actor who has not been able to score another hit since 2009's "Couples Retreat".
