Yet another Marvel property dominates the box-office this weekend. Sony's animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" managed to top the charts and score a December record. Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood's "The Mule" made a solid debut, while the Peter Jackson-produced fantasy adventure "Mortal Engines" tanked.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" opened with $35.4 million over the weekend, breaking the record for the largest opening ever for an animated film in December. Although pundits were predicting a $40 million or higher debut, it's still a good start. With the holidays so close and a very enthusiastic reception from both critics (97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 87 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A+" from CinemaScore), this one is going to make a ton of money. Overseas, the film brought in $21 million from 44 markets and will expand further next week, including China.

The drug trafficking drama "The Mule", directed by and starring Clint Eastwood, performed as expected and opened in second place with $17.2 million from just 2,588 theaters. The film received mixed reviews from critics (62% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic), but a more positive reception from audiences ("A-" from CinemaScore).

In third place we have "Dr' Seuss' The Grinch" which is really enjoying the holiday season. The film raked in $11.5 million over the weekend after a soft 23% drop, and has grossed a total of $239.2 million domestically, and another $133.4 million overseas.

After three weeks at the top, Disney's "Ralph Breaks the Internet" fell to #4, grossing $9.5 million after a 41% drop. The film has reached a domestic tally of $154.4 million, and it has raked in a total of $130.7 million internationally.

The Top 5 is rounded out by this week's dud, Universal's "Mortal Engines". The film opened with a catastrophic $7.5 million from 3,103 theaters against a  $100 million budget. The critical reception has been mostly negative (28% on Rotten Tomatoes and 44 on Metacritic), and the worst of all is that audiences seem to agree with the critics as the film received a lackluster "B-" grade from CinemaScore. The film opened in international markets last week and added another 11 countries this weekend, and the grand total so far is only $34.8 million.

Fox's PG-13 re-release of "Deadpool 2" titled "Once Upon a Deadpool" opened outside the Top 10, grossing $2.6 million from 1,566 theaters. It also opened in 12 countries internationally, grossing an estimated $1 million. The re-release's grosses will be added to Deadpool 2's tally, so its domestic earnings have now reached $322.3 million.

Meanwhile, "Aquaman" continues its strong international performance with another $126.4 million this weekend, bringing its overseas cume to $261.3 million.
