Directed by Michael Noer ("R") from a script by Aaron Guzikowski ("Prisoners"), the 2017 drama "Papillon" is a remake based on the 1973 film of the same name, which starred Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, and the autobiographies of French convict Henri Charrière "Papillon" and "Banco".

The film stars Charlie Hunnam as Henri "Papillon" Charrière, a Parisian safecracker, who is framed for murder and condemned to life in the notorious penal colony on Devil's Island. Determined to escape, he forms an unlikely alliance with convicted counterfeiter Louis Dega (Rami Malek). Roland Moller, Tommy Flanagan, Eve Hewson, Michael Socha and Ian Beattie co-star.

"Papillon" premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and received a limited release in theaters on August 24, 2018. The film received mixed reviews from critics.
