Tron 3 Canceled by Disney

Although we first heard in March that Disney is moving forward with the long-delayed "Tron 3", it seems that the studio is now ready to give up on the project entirely. The news surged throughout the Internet with many publications reporting that the sequel is no longer in production. Furthermore, it seems that Disney never actually green-lit the project, in the first place.

"Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski was expected to return at the helm, and stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were set to reprise their roles. Reports about the cancellation also mention the fact that Jared Leto was in the running to star in an undisclosed role. Leto is now playing The Joker in David Ayer's "Suicide Squad".

Although it's probably heartbreaking news for the fans, the truth is that "Tron: Legacy" was not a huge breakthrough at the box-office and Disney does have some bad experience with costly blockbusters that flopped, for example "John Carter" and "Tomorrowland".

in-theaters-san-andreas-aloha-barely-lethal-gemma-bovery

In theaters this week we have two new wide releases. First is the disaster movie "San Andreas" starring Dwayne Johnson. The film has been getting a rather mixed critical reception, but I suppose the trailers are really enough for anyone to know if it's the kind of spectacle that they can enjoy. The second is Cameron Crowe's romantic dramedy "Aloha", which unfortunately is not the comeback everyone was expecting from the director of "Jerry Maguire". In limited release two noteworthy films are the teen action comedy "Barely Lethal" starring Hailee Steinfeld, Samuel L. Jackson and Jessica Alba, and the dramedy "Gemma Bovery" starring Gemma Arterton and Fabrice Luchini. More about each movie after the jump.

Synopses, details, critical reception, trailers, clips and more after the jump.

Gemma Bovery Trailer, Clips and Posters

The dramedy "Gemma Bovery" opens in theaters in the U.S. today, so we have a batch of previews for the film which includes the official trailer, two clips, five images and five posters. The film stars Gemma Arterton as the titular character, a British beauty living in a Norman village with her husband Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng). Local baker and Flaubert fan Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini) falls in love with the beautiful Gemma, and he will soon discover just how much life sometimes imitates art.

Co-written and directed by Anne Fontaine ("Coco avant Chanel"), the film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Posy Simmonds.

Check out the trailer, clips, images and posters after the jump.

Barely Lethal Movie Trailer, Clips and Poster

The official trailer, five clips and a poster for the teen action comedy "Barely Lethal" have been released. Directed by Kyle Newman ("Fanboys") the film stars Hailee Steinfeld as a teenage special ops agent who yearns for a normal adolescence. So, she fakes her own death and then assumes the role of an exchange student in a typical American high school. However, she won't be able to stay hidden forever. The film is apparently a bit of a missed opportunity, according to the critics. Reviews suggest that the cast is solid, the premise is good, but it ultimately falters in execution and becomes an ambitious but flawed caper with some genuinely funny moments. Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Alba, Sophie Turner, Jaime King, Toby Sebastian and Steve-O also star.

"Barely Lethal" begins a limited run in theaters this week.

Check out the trailer, clips and poster after the jump.

Aloha Movie Clips and Featurettes

Two new clips and making of featurettes for the romantic dramedy "Aloha" have been released. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe ("Jerry Maguire"), the film stars Bradley Cooper as a celebrated military contractor who returns to the US Space program in Honolulu, Hawaii where he reconnects with a long-ago love (Rachel McAdams) and unexpectedly falls for a hard-charging Air Force watchdog (Emma Stone) assigned to him. Although many expected this to be a return to form for Crowe, the film is a huge letdown. Reviews have been incredibly harsh and the general consensus is that the film is "meandering and insubstantial". No wonder there aren't more clips available online. The cast also features Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin.

Watch the clips and featurettes after the jump.

San Andreas Movie Clips

The earthquake movie "San Andreas" opens in theaters today, so here are eight new clips from the movie. The film has been getting mostly mixed reviews, but I wouldn't worry too much about that, because disaster flicks are meant to be brainless fun. I have a particular fondness for the genre at its most outrageous (see "Volcano"), so I'm looking forward to seeing this one. Directed by Brad Peyton ("Journey 2: The Mysterious Island"), the film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Archie Panjabi, Paul Giamatti and Ioan Gruffudd.

Chris Pine in talks to star in Wonder Woman opposite Gal Gadot
Chris Pine ("Star Trek") is in talks to join the cast of Warner Bros' "Wonder Woman". Pine would play Steve Trevor, the love interest of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). In the comics Trevor was an intelligence officer in the US Army during World War II whose plane crashed on Paradise Island, the isolated homeland of the Amazons, and was nursed back to health by the Amazon princess Diana, who fell in love with him and followed him when he returned to the outside world, thus becoming Wonder Woman.

The film is directed by Patty Jenkins ("Monster") who replaced Michelle MacLaren ("Breaking Bad"). The script has been written by Jason Fuchs ("Pan").

"Wonder Woman" opens in theaters on June 23rd, 2017.

Jurassic World Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes

Six new behind-the-scenes videos for "Jurassic World" have been released online. Colin Trevvorow's reboot is generating a lot of buzz, and analysts are predicting a $100 million opening weekend. To some degree it doesn't even matter what they're doing with the marketing campaign for this movie, people are going to be there to see where the franchise is headed 14 years after "Jurassic Park III". The film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Irrfan Khan, Jake Johnson, Omar Sy and Judy Greer.

"Jurassic World" opens in theaters on June 12, 2015.

The film is directed by Nima Nourizadeh ("Project X") from a script by Max Landis ("Chronicle"). Topher Grace, Walton Goggins, Connie Britton, Bill Pullman, and Tony Hale also star.

"American Ultra" opens in theaters on August 21st.

First Macbeth Movie Clips and Images

Two new clips and a batch of images for Justin Kurzel's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Macbeth" have been released. Michael Fassbender stars as Macbeth, a duke of Scotland, who receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife (Marion Cotillard), Macbeth murders his king and takes the throne for himself. Nominated for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival, the film also stars Paddy Considine, David Thewlis, Sean Harris, Jack Reynor and Elizabeth Debicki.

"Macbeth" is scheduled for release in the U.K. on October 2nd, 2015, but there is no released date available for the U.S.

Point Break Remake Trailer, Poster and Images

The first trailer, posters and images for the "Point Break" remake have been released online. The film stars Luke Bracey as Johnny Utah (formerly played by Keanu Reeves), a young FBI agent who infiltrates a team of thrill seeking elite athletes, led by the charismatic Bodhi (Edgar Ramirez), who are suspected of carrying out a string of staggering crimes that kill innocent people and send the world's economy into a tailspin. Bodhi's role was played by Patrick Swayze in Kathryn Bigelow's original film.

The updated version looks more like a "Fast & Furious" movie than an actual remake, although 2001's "The Fast and the Furious" was in many ways similar to "Point Break". Which is funny considering F&F cinematographer Ericson Core is directing this. I don't care much for the over-the-top action scenes and bad CGI, but I absolutely hate the gloomy color palette that the filmmakers probably believe will make the movie look cool. It doesn't. It just looks lifeless. And the characters are supposed to live life to the fullest, so I would imagine they should have gone with some brighter, intense cinematography, instead of this bland mess. And speaking of characters, Bodhi as played by Ramirez seems to be anything but the charismatic leader he's supposed to be. It's also a bit weird how they decided to change hairstyles between the two protagonists. Bodhi now has the dark hair while Utah has the long blonde hairdo. If that's the best they can think of for a remake, they should have just given up on it.

The remake also stars Ray Winstone, Teresa Palmer and Delroy Lindo. "Point Break" opens in theaters on December 25th (2D and 3D).

Dwayne Johnson Wedding Surprise

We can now add "Wedding Officiant" to the list of awesome things that Dwayne Johnson can do (he is now officially ordained). There'a actually some history behind this video, so let's start there. In 2013, during the press junket for "Pain & Gain", Nick Mundy, a member of the entertainment site Screen Junkies, got to act out his infinite love for The Rock, while basically ignoring everyone else during the interviews with the film's cast. Wahlberg looked especially hurt by Mundy's attitude. You can watch that trainwreck here. On the positive side, the event sparked a special kind of friendship between Mundy and Johnson that involved many more bizzare interviews.

In an interview for "Furious 7", Mundy asked if Johnson could be the best man at his wedding, which the actor declined. However, the Screen Junkies team and Johnson saw the opportunity of a lifetime for a special kind of surprise. And the results you can watch below:

First Images from Ridley Scott's THE MARTIAN Starring Matt Damon

The first images for Ridley Scott's sci-fi drama "The Martian" have been released. Described as being "Cast Away" in space and based on Andy Weir's novel, the film stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who is presumed dead and left behind by his crew after a manned mission to Mars is derailed by a fierce storm. The film then follows the astronaut's struggle to stay alive, as well as the efforts of his crewmates, who are plotting a dangerous rescue mission, and the efforts of NASA scientists back on Earth. The script has been penned by Drew Goddard ("The Cabin in the Woods"). The film also stars Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, Mackenzie Davis, and Michael Pena.

"The Martian" opens in theaters on November 25th.

Suicide Squad Batmobile Joker Set Videos

David Ayer's "Suicide Squad" is shooting in Toronto and the first set videos have begun surfacing online. The videos offer a very clear look at a sequence involving the Batmobile and what looks like the Jokermobile. It looks like Batman is hot on the trail of The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and two of the videos feature short glimpses of the actors in full makeup. It had been rumored that Ben Affleck will be making an appearance as the Dark Knight in the film, and this is pretty close to a confirmation. The scene looks cool enough, and if I hadn't already known that this is a DC Comics movie, I would have assumed that Ayer's shooting "End of Watch 2". It will be nice to see how the director blends his taste for urban action with the superhero genre.

The film also stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Adam Beach as Slipknot, Viola Davis as Amanda Walker, Ike Barinholtz as Hugo Strange, Raymond Olubowale as King Shark and Jim Parrack as Jonny Frost. In unknown roles we have Alex Meraz, Scott Eastwood and Common.

"Suicide Squad" opens in theaters on August 5, 2016.

memorial-day-weekend-box-office-tomorrowland-poltergeist

There were certainly high hopes for Disney's "Tomorrowland", but all of them have now faded as the $190 million blockbuster scored a minor debut which barely topped the box office during a Memorial Day weekend that proved surprisingly slow. The horror remake "Poltergeist" made a decent debut, while "Pitch Perfect 2" and "Mad Max: Fury Road" continue to impress.

Supergirl TV Series Trailer and Poster

The first extended trailer and four pictures for the upcoming TV series "Supergirl" have been released online. The show will star Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin. Raised by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara decides at the age of 24 to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Mehcad Brooks, Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan, Helen Slater and Dean Cain also star.

Honestly, the series doesn't look like much right now. The trailer has some good things and some bad things. I would say the worst is that it pretty much sums up the whole pilot episode. I guess CBS has no faith in its audience. The visual effects are also a pretty low point, but they're also the most you can expect from a TV series. There are some really silly moments in there, too, but hopefully, creator Andrew Kreisberg ("Arrow", "The Flash") can outmanoeuvre them. "Supergirl" is expected to premiere this November.

Reese Witherspoon to star in Disney's Tinker Bell live-action movie
Disney has a huge line-up of live-action movies in the works that includes "The Jungle Book", "Beauty and the Beast", "Dumbo", "Mulan", "Winnie the Pooh", "Pinocchio" and "Jack and the Beanstalk". A lesser known previously existing live-action project that never came to fruition, a live-action Tinker Bell movie called "Tink" which was supposed to star Elizabeth Banks as the title character. Plans began in 2010, but its fate remained uncertain, until now.

It has been reported that Reese Witherspoon ("Wild") will star in and produce "Tink", while the script will be written by Victoria Strouse, co-writter of "Finding Dory", the sequel to "Finding Nemo". The Tinker Bell movie is described as being in the vein of "Maleficent" and that it will play with the idea and timeline of the Peter Pan story. The film is also said to be more modest budget project than other live-action Disney films.

in-theaters-tomorrowland-poltergeist-when-marnie-was-there-aloft

The weekend will easily be dominated by Disney's sci-fi adventure "Tomorrowland" starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson, although reviews haven't been great. Another wide release this week is the "Poltergeist" remake produced by Sam Raimi. I personally feel that the classic horror film did not need updating, especially since every modern haunted house film either rips off or honors the original. The most notable limited releases of the week are Hiromasa Yonebayashi's animated feature "When Marnie Was There" and the drama "Aloft" starring Jennifer Connelly. More about each movie after the jump.

Synopses, details, critical reception, trailers, clips and more after the jump.

Aloft Movie Trailer and Clips

The drama "Aloft" has begun its limited run in theaters in the U.S., so here is a trailer and six clips for the film. Directed by Claudia Llosa, the film stars Jennifer Connelly as a struggling mother who encounters the son she abandoned 20 years earlier. This is Llosa’s English language debut following her Golden Bear winning and Oscar nominated film "Milk of Sorrow". The critical reception, however, hasn't been very warm. The general consesus seems to be that the talented cast is buried under the film's brooding atmosphere and narrative issues. "Aloft" also stars Cillian Murphy, Mélanie Laurent, Oona Chaplin and William Shimell.

Watch the trailer and clips after the jump.

When Marnie Was There Trailer and Poster

Today we have the U.S. release trailer and the original poster for the Japanese animated feature "When Marnie Was There". Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi ("The Secret World of Arrietty") and based on Joan G. Robinson's novel, the film tells the story of a young girl who is sent to the country for health reasons, where she meets an unlikely friend in the form of Marnie, a young girl with flowing blonde hair.

The film features the voices of Sara Takatsuki, Kasumi Arimura, Nanako Matsushima, Susumu Terajima, Toshie Negishi and Ryôko Moriyama. The U.S. version features the voices of Hailee Steinfeld, Kiernan Shipka, John C. Reilly, Vanessa L. Williams, Geena Davis, Catherine O'Hara, Ellen Burstyn and Kathy Bates.

"When Marnie Was There" is currently in limited release in the U.S.

Check out the trailer and poster after the jump.

Tomorrowland Movie Clips

Disney's new sci-fi adventure "Tomorrowland" opened in theaters yesterday to mixed reviews, which was a bit surprising, especially considering the talent involved. The film is directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") from a script by Damon Lindelof ("Lost") and it stars Britt Robertson, George Clooney, Raffey Cassidy, Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Tim McGraw, Raffey Cassidy, Keegan-Michael Key and Kathryn Hahn. Nevertheless, the film has been hailed as a fun, imaginative ride for the most part, if you can forgive its narrative missteps. If you haven't decided yet whether or not to go see it, here are four new clips from the movie.

Watch the clips after the jump.

Poltergeist Remake Clips

Four new clips have been released for the "Poltergeist" remake produced by Sam Raimi ("Evil Dead"). The film is now in theaters, and as I expected, it's been getting quite a beating from critics and audiences alike. The most common complaint is that it brings nothing new and is yet another pointless remake. The film stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams, Kyle Catlett and Kennedi Clements.

Andrea Riseborough to play the villain in The Crow reboot
And not just any villain. Actress Andrea Riseborough ("Birdman") is set to star as Top Dollar in the long-delayed "The Crow" reboot. Top Dollar was played in the original 1994 film by Michael Wincott. It's not unusual for reboots to change genders for certain characters as part of the reimagining process, and Riseborough is a very talented actress and I believe she could make it work. Whether or not the reboot itself will work in the end, remains to be seen.

The film endured a lot of turmoil before reaching this stage and while the idea of seeing a new version of "The Crow" doesn't spark my interest, at least we're done with the "Oh, look who quit now" stories. Corin Hardy ("The Woods") will direct from a script by Cliff Dorfman ("Warrior"). Jack Huston ("Boardwalk Empire") will play Eric Draven, the protagonist who is brutally murdered and returns from the dead to exact revenge, and Jessica Brown Findlay ("Downton Abbey") will star as Draven's murdered girlfriend.

"The Crow" is expected to be released sometime in 2016.

Tomorrowland Movie Featurettes

Four new behind-the-scenes featurettes have been released for Disney's sci-fi adventure "Tomorrowland". Directed by Brad Bird ("The Incredibles") from a script by Damon Lindelof ("Lost"), the film looks pretty amazing, and the featurettes are proof that it's a truly imaginative ride. However, early reviews have been mostly mixed, and it's quite possible that Disney is heading for quite a flop. But who knows. I mean, "Mad Max: Fury Road" had stellar reviews, but failed to outgross "Pitch Perfect 2". Time will tell. The film stars Britt Robertson, George Clooney, Raffey Cassidy, Hugh Laurie, Judy Greer, Tim McGraw, Raffey Cassidy, Keegan-Michael Key and Kathryn Hahn.

Will Ferrell to star in Lasse Hallstrom's new movie
Will Ferrell ("Get Hard") has joined the comedy "Tom's Dad", a film that should prove an interesting choice for the actor. Directed by Lasse Hallström ("The Cider House Rules"), the film focuses on a struggling nightclub performer in 1960s Nevada, who aims for stardom with a new stage act featuring circus animals, while also trying to reconnect with his estranged 12-year-old son whose mother goes away on a three-week trip. Written by Martin Casella ("One Night Stand") with revisions by Keith Clarke ("The Way Back"), the film sounds like more of a dramedy which could be a nice change of pace for Ferrell in the vein of 2010's underrated "Everything Must Go". Principal photography is set to begin early next year, with further casting underway.

New San Andreas Movie Pictures

Today we have 31 new images from the earthquake movie "San Andreas". The Dwayne Johnson starrer amps up the usual disaster movie formula with an earthquake the size of Roland Emmerich's "2012". While the pictures aren't as generous with the catastrophic imagery as the trailers were, they do offer a great look at the film's cast which also includes Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Archie Panjabi, Paul Giamatti and Ioan Gruffudd. The film tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. For the set video Reynolds returns to Mario Lopez's show "Extra", and it ultimately doesn't show that much, it's mostly just a buzz piece to keep everyone's attention focused on this movie. Tim Miller directs from a script by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick ("Zombieland"). Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, T.J. Miller, Style Dayne and Ed Skrein co-star.

"Deadpool" opens in theaters on February 12, 2016.
