Box-Office: IN THE HEART OF THE SEA Flops; MOCKINGJAY PART 2 Still Champ

The high-seas adventure "In the Heart of the Sea" failed to make much of an impression despite almost taking the top spot at the box-office. "The Hunger Games: Mockingkay Part 2" continues to reign supreme.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Based on the true story that inspired the creation of Moby Dick, Ron Howard's "In the Heart of the Sea" scored a disastrous $11 million opening weekend, landing the film in second place. The epic film has an equally epic budget estimated at $100 million, which makes turning a profit somewhat difficult, especially considering that the film only added $39.4 million from overseas markets.

At the top of the box-office, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" is still barely holding on thanks to weak results from the competition, making it the second film in the "Hunger Games" franchise to stay in the lead for four straight weeks. The final installment in the series grossed $11.3 this weekend for a domestic total of $244.4 million and $564 million worldwide, so far the weakest of all four movies.

In holdover from last week we have "The Good Dinosaur" in third place with $10.4 million ($89.6 million domestic total) and "Creed" with $10.1 million ($79.3 domestic total). The Christmas horror comedy "Krampus" rounds up the top 5 with $10.1 million and a very nice $28.1 million total.

Paramount's limited release of "The Big Short" proved to be an impressive event. The financial drama scored $720,000 over the weekend from only eight theaters. The film expands nationwide on December 23, but it remains to be seen if it can do better than "Steve Jobs" did when it went nationwide.

This Friday, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" booms into theaters, so stay tuned for some spectacular results. Or not. Time will tell.

New Wide Releases: "In the Heart of the Sea", "The Big Short".
