Chloe Moretz to Star in LITTLE MERMAID Retelling

Chloe Grace Moretz to star in The Little Mermaid
Chloë Grace Moretz ("Kick-Ass", "The Equalizer") is set to star in a new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale as the titular characater. According to Variety, the film is being developed by Working Title and Universal with "Four Weddings and a Funeral" scribe Richard Curtis in talks to pen the script.

There is no information regarding the plot, but it's safe to assume that it will follow the original story of a mermaid who longs to get a glimpse of the world inhabited by humans. The Little Mermaid strikes a Faustian deal with a Sea Witch to become human after falling in love with a man (who happens to be a prince) she saved from drowning.

The project previously had Sofia Coppola attached to direct, but she left citing creative differences with the studios. Some say Coppola may have disagreed with the studio's choice for the lead role. The studio held off the announcement of Moretz's involvement until after a writer was brought on board for a new draft. No release date has been set.

Chloë Grace Moretz is currently filming "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" and has just finished work on Gerard Barrett's biopic "Brain on Fire" based on Susannah Cahalan's memoir. Two other completed films starring Moretz that will be released in 2016 are the young adult sci-fi adventure "The 5th Wave" and the crime drama "November Criminals".
