Box-Office: FOCUS Modest Success for Will Smith

The Will Smith starrer "Focus" managed to take the top spot at the weekend box-office, but the numbers weren't very impressive. Horror flick "The Lazarus Effect" grossed $10.6 million and ranked fifth.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Focus" proves that it doesn't always pay off to place the marketing weight on the shoulders of its leading star. While the film did gross $19 million, enough to place first in the top 10, it is one of Will Smith's lowest opening weekends and even a bit of a disappointment since the romantic caper was projected to earn between $21 million and $23 million. It's not all that bad, though, since the film cost $50 million to produce and it still has a good chance of turning a middling profit.

The weekend's other wide release, the Blumhouse horror film "The Lazarus Effect" starring Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass opened fifth with $10.6 million, below expectations of a $12 - $14 million debut, but not bad for the $3.3 million production.

In the meantime, "Kingsman: The Secret Service" is really holding strong. The comic-book based actioner grossed $11.7 million over the weekend and has now cumed $85.6 million domestically and $124 million from overseas markets. Its main competitor from the past two weeks, "Fifty Shades of Grey" dropped like a rock to fourth place with a 3-day gross of $10.9 million. The S&M erotic drama has now grossed $147 million domestically, of which $85 million were grossed in its first weekend. The film is doing much better overseas where it scored $338 million and has now become Universal's highest-grossing R-rated international release.

Another movie with a strong hold is "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" with $11.7 million and a domestic total of $140 million.

The Alzheimer drama "Still Alice" received a solid boost due to Julianne Moore's Oscar win and went up to No. 8 with a $2.6 million weekend gross. The $5 million movie has now reached a total gross of $11.9 million.

New Wide Releases: "Focus", "The Lazarus Effect".

Biggest Drop : "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" (-59.8%)

Smallest Drop : "American Sniper" (-23%)
