Box-Office: CHAPPIE Top Spot Disappointment, UNFINISHED BUSINESS Bombs

Box Office Chappie Unfinished Business

This weekend the box-office suffered a real meltdown. The overall box-office is estimated to have dropped 40% compared to the same frame in 2014. New wide releases "Chappie" and "Unfinished Business" disappointed while the best weekend performance belongs to "The Second Best Marigold Hotel".

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

The first element of this disaster is Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie", a medium-budget high-concept sci-fi that failed to attract audiences but still managed to open in first place with $13.3 million. The film has achieved the lowest opening in Blomkamp's short career. "Elysium" grossed $29.8 million in its first three days and "District 9", his feature film debut, opened with $37.3 million. "Chappie" cost 49 million to produce, so it's not as big a disaster as "Jupiter Ascending", so Sony is now looking towards overseas markets to save the day.

Another disastrous wide release is the Vince Vaughn comedy "Unfinished Business" which barely made it into the top 10 with $4.8 million. For Vaughn this is the latest in a long string of misfires, which include "Delivery Man""The Internship""The Watch" and "The Dilemma", and also his worst. Everyone is now looking forward to seeing the actor reinvent himself on TV with his lead role in the new season of "True Detective".

A better result was obtained by the indie sequel "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" which opened in third place with $8.6 million. The PG film only opened in 1,573 theaters and its per-screen average is better than that of any of the films in the top ten.

In other box-office related news, "Focus" got pushed to second place with $10 million, "Kingsman: The Secret Service" is holding in fourth with $8.3 million, and "Fifty Shades of Grey" has surpassed the $500 million milestone worldwide.
