the quiet ones 2014 olivia cooke

From the makers of "The Woman in Black" comes "The Quiet Ones", an intriguing piece of found footage horror. An exclusive trailer has been released for the film which stars Jared Harris ("Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows") as an unorthodox professor who uses controversial methods and leads his best students in a dangerous experiment designed to create a poltergeist and provide material evidence of the phenomenon. Also starring Sam Claflin ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"), Olivia Cooke ("Bates Motel") and Erin Richards ("Breaking In"), "The Quiet Ones" opens in theaters on April 11, 2014.

lego movie batman

The new trailer for "The LEGO Movie" is finally here. As a bonus we also have the Batman teaser that was released before the full trailer. It all looks funny enough, but not particularly remarkable. The kids will definitely love this, and Batman has a some of the funniest scenes in the trailer, but other than the fantastic voice cast, I don't see much potential here. The characters are voiced by Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie. "The LEGO Movie" opens in theaters on February 7, 2014.

labor day kate winslet josh brolin

The first two trailers for the drama "Labor Day" have been released. The film is directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno", "Up in the Air") and it stars Josh Brolin as a fugitive who takes a 13-year-old boy (Gattlin Griffith) and his reclusive mother (Kate Winslet) hostage. As his story is revealed during the long Labor Day weekend, the relationship between the three becomes more complicated. The first trailer presents the plot in a more general manner and features some great use of music, but if you're looking for more plot, the second trailer (from Moviefone) is more detailed, if a bit spoilery.

The film also stars J.K. Simmons, Clark Gregg, James Van Der Beek and Tobey Maguire. "Labor Day" will get a limited release on December 25th and will expand on January 31, 2014.

amanda seyfried lovelace 2013

Five new movie clips have been released for the biopic "Lovelace". Amanda Seyfried stars as porn star Linda Lovelace, and the film focuses on Lovelace's marriage with Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard), the man who abused her physically and sexually and coerced her to star in "Deep Throat", the porn film that made her famous.

The impressive cast also features Juno Temple, James Franco, Sharon Stone, Chris Noth, Hank Azaria, Adam Brody, Robert Patrick, Wes Bentley, Chloe Sevigny, Bobby Cannavale and Eric Roberts.

"Lovelace" will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 5th.

fede alvarez evil dead
sam raimi evil dead

These last couple of days have been all about mixed messages regarding the "Evil Dead" franchise. It all started when Evil Dead remake director Fede Alvarez sort of announced via Twitter that Sam Raimi will be directing "Army of Darkness 2". For the uninitiated, "Army of Darkness" was the third installment in Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. This came as a confirmation of another announcement of sorts made by franchise star Bruce Campbell at the Wizard World Nashville Comic Con.

bruce campbell evil dead
Here is Bruce Campbell's half-kidding, half-serious statement when asked about "Army of Darkness 2":
"The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I used to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here."

Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be alright. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it.

Alright sir, the answer is yes."
A few days later, Fede Alvarez was asked about that sequel on Twitter and his response pointed towards Raimi taking over the project. Here is the Twitter exchange:
Benjamin Thiele @thielebenjamin: "Hey @fedalvar will you be directing the Army Of Darkness 2 movie?"

Fede Alvarez @fedalvar: "Sam Raimi will!"
evil dead 2013 remake

Everything gets stranger, though, when it comes to Alvarez's own "Evil Dead" sequel. Although initially the young director and co-writer Rodo Sayagues were tapped to develop a sequel for the remake, Sayagues spoke about the project yesterday and revealed that in fact both he and Alvarez had left the project many months ago:
"Look, I am sorry to tell you this but that movie won’t happen. Evil Dead 2 is not going to happen, at least not with us involved. We left that project many months ago because we preferred to put our energies on other things. I don’t know if the producers still have intentions of making it. But what I can tell you is that we are not part of that project."
Today Fede Alvarez has responded via Twitter that we shouldn't believe everything we read online. The exact quote is: "Don't believe everything you read online..." Furthermore, the director told Bloody Disgusting that it was all a misunderstanding, and that "Rodo meant we’re not actually making Evil Dead 2 right now because the priority is Sam [Raimi's] Army of Darkness 2. But the plan of making a sequel to our Evil Dead is very much alive."

In conclusion, it seems that everything is all right and fans will get not one, but two sequels, one for each of the "Evil Dead" series, and Raimi's movie will be released first.

Three new clips and a complete B-Roll have been released for Disney's "Frozen". The film doesn't really seem to have that special something to set it apart from other animated features out there, but for those interested, the B-Roll has some cool behind-the-scenes footage which shows the actors recording their roles and how the animators worked on the film. Featuring the voices of Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, Alan Tudyk and Josh Gad, "Frozen" opens in theaters on November 27th.

Based on a true story, Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jordan Belfort, a hard-partying, drug-addicted stockbroker who ended up spending two years in federal prison for security fraud and money laundering. x-men days of future past movie image

The time has come to unveil the first trailer for Bryan Singer's sequel/prequel "X-Men: Days of Future Past". And it doesn't disappoint. Singer has said that the visual effects are not finished, so don't expect to see any Sentinels. Anyway, the trailer is pretty amazing, teasing the story, characters and the film's darker tone, with great style and epic use of music. For those wondering (since there are some huge debates online right now), the songs in the trailer are John Murphy's Adagio in D Minor from "Sunshine", in the first half, and Hans Zimmer's Journey to the Line from "The Thin Red Line". The ending also features a short cue from Zimmer's "Inception" soundtrack.

Here's what the plot is all about. Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) gets sent back to 1973 to help stop the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants. To accomplish his mission, he will have to join forces with Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other younger versions of mutants we know and love.

The cast also features Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Omar Sy and Halle Berry.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" opens May 23, 2014.

the hobbit desolation of smaug empire covers

Two new TV spots and five Empire Magazine covers have been released online for Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug". The TV spots offer short versions of the full trailer, but the Empire covers, which feature Thorin, Bilbo, Gandalf and Bard the Bowman, look really cool.

The film stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, John Bell, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Fry, James Nesbitt and Aidan Turner.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens on December 13, 2013.

the lego movie picture

Two new teasers for "The LEGO Movie" have been released as a prelude for the upcoming full trailer. The teasers preview two of the film's characters: Emmet and Wyldstyle. The story of the animated feature follows Emmet (Chris Pratt), a LEGO character who is mistaken for the extraordinary MasterBuilder and recruited to save the world from the evil tyrant President Business (Will Ferrell). The cast also includes Will Arnett, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Nick Offerman and Alison Brie. "The LEGO Movie" opens in theaters on February 7, 2014.

The first featurette for the upcoming "Veronica Mars" movie has been released. The film has been funded through a Kickstarter campaign and this featurette is pretty much entirely aimed at fans of the TV series. Kristen Bell reprises the role of Veronica Mars in this Rob Thomas-directed feature and she will be joined by Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen, Tina Majorino, Chris Lowell and Enrico Colantoni. An exact release date has not been set, but it's expected to come out in 2014.

The final trailer and a new international TV spot have been released for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire". The TV spot is almost identical to the first trailer, but the final trailer provides lots of new footage from the movie while being surprisingly short.

Francis Lawrence ("Constantine", "I Am Legend") directs this sequel which stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Donald Sutherland, Woody Harrelson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Elizabeth Banks, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright and Amanda Plummer.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" opens on November 22, 2013.

man of tai chi movie image

The first exclusive clip for Keanu Reeves' Kung Fu action film "Man of Tai Chi" has been released. The clip teases one of the film's fights and as far as the action is concerned, it looks pretty damn entertaining. The film stars Tiger Hu Chen as a young fighter who enters an underground martial arts tournament run by a sinister character (Reeves). Featuring martial arts choreography by Yuen Woo-Ping ("The Matrix", "Kill Bill"), the film also stars Karen Mok, Iko Uwais and Simon Yam. "Man of Tai Chi" opens on November 1, 2013.

mortal kombat legacy web series

Director Kevin Tancharoen, the man behind the wildly popular web series "Mortal Kombat: Legacy", has dropped out of Warner Bros' big screen reboot of the video game franchise. Tancharoen's involvement in the MK universe started with his 2011 short "Mortal Kombat Rebirth" which showcased a much grittier way to adapt the popular video game. Following the viral success of that short, Warner Bros. put him in charge of the "Legacy" web series. The second season of that series was released four weeks ago. (Watch the full season here).

This weekend, Tancharoen tweeted the following:
"After 3 years of Kombat, I've decided to move on to other creative opportunities. I wish everyone involved in the movie big success. Thanks!"
The tweet indicates that the big screen reboot is still moving forward, but Warner Bros. will have to find a new director to handle it. What is more disconcerting is that Tancharoen was the man whose vision stood as the foundation for the reboot and many had high hopes for HIS version of "Mortal Kombat". It's not an easy obstacle to overcome for Warner, but I'm sure there are still plenty of directors willing to hop onto such a lucrative franchise. What remains to be seen is if they can still deliver what the fans want.

bad grandpa no 1 at the box-office

This week, one movie finally managed to knock "Gravity" off from the top spot. It's not some fancy awards-bait drama, nor is it some hi-tech 3D effects extravaganza. It's Johnny Knoxville's newest comedy "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa". The film managed an excellent $32 million ($15 million budget) and with the relatively positive reviews and audience response (7.2 on IMDb.com) it's expected that the film will continue to perform well and earn a lot of money for the Jackass star. Compared to previous "Jackass" opening weekends, "Bad Grandpa" ranks second, beneath "Jackass 3-D" ($50 million) and above "Jackass: The Movie" ($22 million) and "Jackass: Number Two" ($29 million).

At No. 2 lands "Gravity". The sci-fi thriller is still holding well, earning $20 million this weekend and the film has already reached a fantastic total of $314 million worldwide ($100 million budget) in 24 days. The same can be said of Tom Hanks' high seas thriller "Captain Phillips" which got pushed to No. 3, but still maintains a steady intake, grossing $11 million this weekend, which adds up to a total of $70 million ($55 million budget). This is Hanks' highest grossing feature film since 2009's "Angels & Demons" and it will help to propel him into the awards season, possibly towards an Academy Award nomination.

Unfortunately, Ridley Scott's crime drama "The Counselor" tanked, despite a star-studded cast and "No Country for Old Men" author Cormac McCarthy's first original screenplay. The film opened at No. 4 and only grossed $8 million. "The Counselor" was met with harsh reviews from critics, and even audiences seemed to be put off by the film's difficult tone and were probably either misled or downright confused by the film's trailers and clips. To be fair, this is one tough movie to sell.

In other news, last week's horror remake "Carrie" fell by 64% in its second weekend, landing at No. 6 and grossing a total of $26 million ($30 million budget), despite high expectations for the Halloween week. The Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sylvester Stallone team up "Escape Plan" also fell hard to No. 7, but the film has performed quite decently overseas, which brings its worldwide total to $45 million.

More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.

A green band version of the first trailer for the comedy "Neighbors" has been released. While most of the differences consist in the removal of the R-rated elements present in the red band trailer, this version does add a few new scenes. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne star as a young couple who are forced to live next door to a fraternity house. Zac Efron stars as the frat leader. Also starring Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jake Johnson, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Mantozoukas and Lisa Kudrow, "Neighbors" opens on May 9, 2014.

x-men days of future past cast photos

In preparation for the full trailer which will be released on October 29th, director Bryan Singer has released an Instagram teaser and a batch of 12 official images have appeared online (via Empire and Entertainment Weekly). The teaser only offers 7 seconds of scenes from the trailer, but you'll have to admit that it does an excellent job of teasing the upcoming trailer. The images are far more revealing as they offer a first look at some of the film's cast members from both timelines. In case you didn't know, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" features time travel and will reunite characters from both the first X-Men trilogy and the "First Class" prequel.

Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) gets sent back to 1973 to help stop the rise of the Sentinels, giant robots programmed to exterminate mutants. This, of course, means that he will have to join forces with Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and the younger versions of the other mutants we know and love, in order to accomplish his mission.

The film also stars Peter Dinklage, Nicholas Hoult, Jennifer Lawrence, Ian McKellan, Patrick Stewart, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Omar Sy and Halle Berry.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" opens May 23, 2014.

captain america winter soldier chris evans samuel l jackson

The first trailers, poster and images for Marvel's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" have been released. In this sequel, Steve Rogers aka Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) will have to fight a villain born out of the Captain's past. Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Rogers' friend who died during their World War II adventures, has survived and become the assassin known as The Winter Soldier.

There are actually two trailers available, the US trailer and the UK International version. I personally couldn't find any difference between the two, but it's still a kick-ass trailer, full of awesome set-pieces and great previews of the new characters played by Robert Redford and Anthony Mackie. There's also a hint of some moral conflict here, regarding the actions of S.H.I.E.L.D.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" also stars Cobie Smulders, Georges St-Pierre, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Maximiliano Hernández and Samuel L. Jackson.

The release date is April 4, 2014.
