Pacific Rim Rinko Kikuchi

A new featurette and banner poster for Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" have been released. In the featurette, del Toro explains how the sets for the Jaeger cockpits were conceived and built. It's truly impressive. I personally thought that there was more CGI used for those cockpits, but apparently I was wrong. They are fully operational mechanical sets that look awesome. The banner poster is a composite of leading actors Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba, and the Jaeger robots in the background. The film also stars Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. The release date is July 12, 2013.

The Beast White House Down

The latest behind-the-scenes featurette for Roland Emmerich's "White House Down" details the fascinating process of recreating the Presidential Limo, also known as "The Beast", and preparing it for some brutal action set pieces. There are very few words that could express how silly the movie looks, but it also feels like the perfect summer guilty pleasure. We have Optimus Prime's Western Star (a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America), and three new cars, the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse (black and blue), the C7 Corvette Stingray (green) and the vintage 1967 Camaro. Bumblebee is the confirmed identity of the Camaro, but the robot identities of the Corvette and Bugatti have not been officially announced. "Transformers 4" is directed by Michael Bay and although it's a reboot mixing in new human characters and new robots, it's also a sequel as it will take place after the events in "Transformers: Dark of the Moon". The cast features Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, Jack Reynor, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Li Bingbing, Sophia Myles and Glenn Morshower. "Transformers 4" is scheduled for release on June 27, 2014.

On one such night, a family who never participated in The Purge before will become the target of a group of psychos when they let in a stranger. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane and Max Burkholder. "The Purge" opens on May 31, 2013.

All is Lost Robert Redford Image

We have the first movie clip for the thoughtful survival film "All is Lost" starring Robert Redford as a man lost at sea who comes face to face with his own mortality as he struggles to survive on his damaged boat. The film is intriguing because it's designed as a one-man-show. For the entire duration of its running time, the only actor you're going to see is Redford, fighting to stay alive at sea, and there will be no dialogue. The clip provides a glimpse of the film's concept as Redford tinkers with his boat's antenna while a threatening storm forms on the horizon. "All is Lost" is directed by J.C. Chandor ("Margin Call") and will open on October 25, 2013.

Henry Cavill Amy Adams Man of Steel

Two new epic TV spots for Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" have been released online and together they're almost as revealing as a new trailer. Cannes Winner Blue is the Warmest Color

The winners of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival have been announced. This year's jury, which was led by Steven Spielberg chose the lesbian drama "Blue is the Warmest Color" as the winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or. The nominees for the top honors included films such as Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic "Behind the Candelabra" starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, Nicholas Winding Refn's violent crime thriller "Only God Forgives" starring Ryan Gosling, the Coen Brothers' drama "Inside Llewyn Davis", Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" and "A Separation" director Asghar Farhadi's new drama "The Past". Steven Spielberg declared the following about this year's Palme d'Or winner:
"For me the film is a great love story that made all of feel like we were privileged to be flies on the wall, to be invited into this story of deep love and deep heartbreak. The director did not put any constraints on the narrative and we were absolutely spellbound by the amazing performances of the two actresses, and especially the way the director observed his characters and just let the characters breathe."
In an unusual move, the jury decided to recognize actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux along with the film. "Inside Llewyn Davis", "Nebraska" and "The Past" did not leave home empty handed, however. The Coen Brothers were awarded the Grand Prix and in the acting categories the winners were Bruce Dern ("Nebraska") and Berenice Bejo ("The Past"). Best director was awarded to Amat Escalante for the drug-related gang violence drama "Heli" and Best Screenplay went to Jia Zhangke for "A Touch of Sin".

Fast and Furious 6 Box Office

It was a spectacular weekend at the box-office and it was no surprise that "Fast & Furious 6" would climb to the top in its opening days. It's just that probably nobody expected it to open so big. The sixth in the successful franchise opened at #1 with a spectacular $98M, making it the best opening in the franchise. The dark comedy "The Hangover Part III" was no match to all that vehicular warfare, and so it opened at a modest second place with $42M, becoming the worst box-office grosser in the franchise. "The Hangover Part II" set a huge standard when it opened in May 2011 with $85M, but the catastrophic quality of that sequel diminished the third installment's chances, especially considering its competition. "Star Trek Into Darkness" held tight in third place with $38M, but its sharp drop confirms the fears of industry specialists who believe that this is not the huge box-office hit that Paramount was expecting from J.J. Abrams. Still, the budget has been recouped and the earnings are healthy enough to warrant another sequel, so "Star Trek" fans shouldn't worry.

A new trailer for Ron Howard's Formula 1 drama "Rush" has been released. Metallica Through the Never Dane DeHaan

The first trailer and poster for the IMAX 3D concert movie "Metallica Through the Never" have been released. The mission, of course, is derailed by the unexpected. "Metallica Through the Never" is directed by Nimrod Antal ("Predators", "Kontroll"). The release date is October 4, 2013. The IMAX 3D version will be available on September 27, 2013.

White House Down Behind the Scenes

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for Roland Emmerich's action thriller "White House Down" has been released by Sony Pictures. The featurette focuses on the film's production values via cast and crew interviews and we get a lot of new footage that highlights the epicness of the action. Most of the film was shot on soundstages, so the production design was crucial in convincingly recreating the White House and several outdoor locations. It's all rather impressive. "White House Down" stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Richard Jenkins, Jason Clarke, Jake Weber and Lance Reddick. The release date is June 28, 2013.

Stephen King's Under the Dome

The World's End Simon Pegg

The domestic trailer and poster for Edgar Wright's comedy "The World's End" have been released. An alien menace stands between them and the perfect hangover and while the first trailer kept the mystery intact, this trailer makes it clear that killer robots have invaded the town. "The World's End" stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman and Rosamund Pike. The release dates are August 14th for the UK and October 25th for the US.

Evan Peters Quicksilver X-Men

A new character and a new cast member have been announced for Bryan Singer's sequel "X-Men: Days of Future Past". The character is Quicksilver and the actor who is going to play him is "American Horror Story" star Evan Peters. The character first appeared in the Marvel's X-Men comics in 1964 and he is the son of Magneto and twin brother of the Scarlet Witch. As a mutant he is capable of moving and thinking at superhuman speeds. What's even more interesting is that Joss Whedon recently stated that he has written both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into the script for "The Avengers 2". The obvious idea would be that the two franchises will somehow become connected within the same cinematic universe, but the main obstacle is that "The Avengers" and all its affiliated stand-alone superhero films belong to Marvel/Disney and "X-Men" belongs to 20th Century Fox. It doesn't seem likely at this point that the two rival studios would join forces, so time will tell. "X-Men: Days of Future Past" opens on July 18, 2014
